I have been comissioned to write a play for young actors (4th & 5th Graders). It's not my first script for this school (actually my 4th) but I would love a little feedback.
Anyone else out there who writes for young actors? Or work with young actors? Anyone up for reading some scenes?
The script is for about 50-60 kids, so it's a little long to post here.

And, I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this.

Thanks
Sophi

I'm curious about how you manage a play with so many kids involved. I've written one play for young audience, which has been performed by young actors sometimes in school venues (the actors were middle and high school students).  Are you creating speaking parts for 50-60 actors? Crowd scenes, lots of short vignettes?

have a big chorus, and try to make sure everyone gets at least one line.
And interesting costumes :)

Have you read The Rising Generation by Anne Jellico? Just about the most magnificent response to write for a huge group of young people ever written. If you haven't read it get hold of it. I've seen it performed several times ( though years ago I must confess) and it never failed to grab the young actors.

whatever you do, don't write a play where the kids have swords!  (being pirates, etc.)  or any weapons, for that matter.

it's chaos!

Last weekend, I had my first kid's play performed.  It was written for four, so I added 11 more roles.

The thing I was most proud of, was creating a real, three dimentional character with two or three lines.

Good luck with it.

The funniest comment I ever read on the forum was about writing for young people. I think it was about high school. Whoever can claim it, I'd love to know the exact quote. This is not exact, but it gets the idea:

"Write one set, a little music, overly heavy on the female roles and so simple that it can be directed by the German or Math teacher."

best,

My goal for this summer is to write a play for schools.  I like that quote, IMR -- it's perfect.

Please don't forget that kids are brilliant.  I am sorry they are required to spend so much time with people who believe that because they are young they need to be controlled.  Allow room for the kids to act, and improv.  Sometime adults actually "get it."
