home to playwrights, artistic directors, literary managers, directors, actors, and others dedicated to the developmenet of new plays, is just about four months old at this point. It makes sounds, crawls a bit, and breaks things if you leave them too low. For the record, we now have 255 members, 41 discussion threads, a bunch of calls for scripts, 16 bulletins, and a dozen cool theatre production pictures. Though playwrights have been the most active voices on the discussion threads, I would say membership is pretty much evenly divided between writers and theatres/producers. I know it's shocking that playwrights are the gabby types, but I think there's much more potential for theatre decision makers to weigh in and tell us about their programs, what's worked and what hasn't, and what sort of networking opportunities would help them.
At which point, if you're not a member of the New Play Network, I invite you to join, if for no other reason that it's kind of fun to watch happen. If you're a recent member, welcome aboard, and please feel free to participate. This is meant to be a collaborative watering hole and not just a showcase for writers trying to move their stuff (though that's certainly not discouraged). If you know of opportunites for writers, promising scripts for theatres, or opportunities for writers or theatres to develop new work, please let us know. And, finally, if you've been a member of the Network for awhile, thank you. You've all been wonderful professionals, and my only regret is that I get y'all to talk more. If there's something missing from the Network or if you have ideas on how to improve it or expand, please let me know.
The New Play Network on MySpace...officially has 300 members!
Sparklers drift in the warm evening! Lekos explode in stunning purple shards! Fresnels shatter with resounding booms! Rockets fire! Flareguns go off across the harbor, set a recording studio afire! Champange corks pop and bubbly overflows! Other vaguely phallic symbolism, etc., etc.!
Even if Jim isn't there.
Anyway, congratulations not to me but to all who have joined in keeping the New Play Network alive and growing. Not bad for a half-brained idea hatched on a slow December night. If you have ideas where you'd like the network to go next, let me know. Let's talk. Let's do lunch. And call your mother!
Most of all, thanks for making it fun. Here's to the next 300.
