Playwrights Online is a reading circle/workshop using Second Life (a FREE online virtual world).

We meet monthly, read through original scripts written by our members, and then give them critique. We welcome actors to come read! We welcome writers to bring their short scripts to be read by the group! And we welcome everyone else to come listen into the reading and offer critique to the author when the reading is done!(You must have voice chat turned on and a speaker/headset connected to your computer to listen into the reading.)

Playwrights Online meets on the first Saturday of every month at 2pm PST in Long Discussion House on sLiterary (in Second Life). The goal of this group is to give playwrights and scriptwriters a place to grow and evolve as writers. To take their first, second, or umpteenth draft to that final draft that is ready for performance. The counterpart to our Second Life group is a yahoogroup.

If you have any questions, when in second life, just pop "LadyBug Furse" a message. You can also email her at eturnq@yahoo.com.

(**In the past we accepted script's from non-second life members but, for various reasons, we had to discontinue that policy. Now we only accept scripts from people that can join us in Second Life!)

I got an email from someone asking about this group and they said they were a little confused.  This is my reply, where I tried to explain the group:

I took the conventional reading circle/workshop, where playwrights gather to have their scripts read aloud and hear peer critique, and moved it online.  It's kind of like a conference call but using Second Life as the interface for the call.

SecondLife is kinda hard to explain.  It’s a virtual world.  This link may help explain it: http://secondlife.com/whatis/

In order to participate in the group a user needs a computer, a broadband Internet connection, a microphone, and headphones.  A user then sets up a free Second Life account for themselves and downloads the Second Life software to their computer.  Finally, on the first Saturday of every month at 2pm we meet at a specific (virtual) location in Second Life to read through scripts.

This group is intended to remove the physical boundaries of a reading circle/workshop.  With the use of a computer you can be ANYWHERE and still participate in this playwrights workshop.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but I don't have all the hardware and don't foresee getting it any time soon short of an unexpected windfall. (Might be down the list a little too--certainly if I suddenly had the money to go to Europe and know I had money in reserve when I got back, it would take priority. Let's hope for a bigger win then eh?)

Press Release
For Immediate Release

ONLINE "VOICE CHAT" WORKSHOP HELPS PLAYWRIGHTS TAKE PAGE TO STAGE

(Sacramento, CA) -   "Playwrights Online," an online workshop/reading circle for Playwrights.  Imagine a conference call but using a free online interface.  The interface is SecondLife, a 3-D virtual world (http://secondlife.com/).  At least once a month "Playwrights Online" meets to read through original scripts using the voice chat interface of SecondLife.

For playwrights who don't live in LA or New York the playwright development programs that exist are few to none.  There are online bulletin boards and forums where playwrights can get a critique of their work but this is only a text-based service.  Theatre is a collaborative and live performance art.  Cold reading and staged readings of new work is essential to the growth of a playwright.  These types of developmental readings were previously restricted to local groups.

"Playwrights Online" defies the boundaries of location.  All a playwright needs to participate in the online readings is a computer that meets the minimum requirements (http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php), a broadband Internet connection, a microphone, and headphones.  SecondLife offers a free account for users.  After getting their free SecondLife account, a playwright then downloads the SecondLife software and meets other group members online the first Saturday of each month at 2pm PST.

Playwrights can submit their scripts to be read at the meetings through the  “Playwrights Online” yahoogroup (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/playwrights_online/).

Playwrights Online is a completely free service run by a playwright.  This group is intended to remove the physical boundaries of a reading circle/workshop within the english-speaking world.
