A small component of the Department of Veterans Affairs has started an Educational Theatre Group to enhance their training experiences. We are looking for scripts. Some things that we are looking for in the scripts are:
- The play has to include some type of educational aspect for adult professionals.
- We would like them 20 minutes or shorter.
- Would prefer one act plays
- The cast should be between 3-8 parts.
- We would not be able to use anything that would offend; even in trying to get the educational point across (e.g. sexual harassment could not use vulgar language)
- You may send a copy of your script to Cecelia.wray@va.gov. You need to identify the cost of your script; you will need to accept a credit card for payment
- If your script is not accepted, no payment will be made.
Also, I would be interested in those that could create scripts from subjects we would furnish. If you are interested, please send information related to experience and cost to the above email.

You know what I always say: CAVEAT EMPTOR: LET THE BUYER BEWARE!!
I would avoid this like the plague until you get more - LOTS MORE -clarifying information.
I would request for Cecilia to PLEASE post a website before any of us submit and then much further information. She writes "A small component of the Department of Veterans Affairs" What the the doohicky does that mean!!!
An e-mail address only? Who are we doing business with? Who is the payer? Credit card payment? Are you telling me the Federal/State government deals in a credit card? A CREDIT CARD??!! Give me a break.
And they are asking you to sell your work outright? Selling your copyright to them? Beware, beware. Never never never.
I have worked for government agencies and for the military and for major corporations, but everything is upfront. Never have I seen/heard such a request.
Who is this person?
Who is her organization? Is it really the VA, or someone using a VA address for their own private enterprise?
I post this hastily as a warning. Later, if I have time, I can tell you more of how the Government contracts/process works in these situations. Put it this way, they don't do a post like this!
Cecilia, please post more legitimate information. This site is in the business of protecting playwrights and its members.
This may have been posted in good faith, but there is not enough information in your posting.
best,

I apologize for my post. It seems an efficient way to try and obtain scripts that seem to be in very short supply (Educational Theme). I have found thousands of script, but almost none that could be used for educational purposes.
The reason that I indicated the use of a credit card is that is the form of payment we use if the amount is within the limit identified by our financial rules.
A small component of the VA? We are the component that enrolls veterans into VA Healthcare. I am not sure most folks have heard of us.
I am not asking anyone to sell their work outright and apologize if that impression was given. My expectation was (and I have received this type of information) that the cost is XX and $XX everytime you perform the script. I am VERY new at this, but I do understand that much. I have worked for the VA for a very, very long time. It kind of boggles the mind (not mine -- I am not that doom and gloom) that someone would post a request in order to "steal" scipts. But script writing is not my world. The veterans are mine.
I am not opposed to providing additional information to anyone who is interested -- sometimes you don't know what you don't know.

Dear Cecilia,
thanks you for getting back.
however, you may want to look under various entries under "Opportunities for Playwrights" to see the information that is posted. If it is not all on the thread, the theatres generally have a website where we can verify who they are, how long they have been in business, what the submission guidelines are, etc.
You wrote, "It kind of boggles the mind (not mine -- I am not that doom and gloom) that someone would post a request in order to "steal" scripts."
Yes, they are out there, just like identity theft never bothers anyone until it happens to them.
Also you wrote "I am not opposed to providing additional information to anyone who is interested -- sometimes you don't know what you don't know."
I do not know why you would not post full information as anyone else would.
Where are you located? What is the street/postal address of your organization so we know you actually exist?
Why don't you sit down with your committee or whomever and decide what you are really looking for? There are excellent companies who can do this type of work for you that are very experienced and professional throughout the United States. If you call up Talent Agencies registered with the Screen actors Guild and Actors Equity and AFTRA that are in your area, they should be able to direct you to companies that do just the sort of thing you want. There are several right here in Chicago I and others have worked for. All these companies also travel. They are not limited to their geographical area. For what you want to do, you should go with people who know what they are doing. They will save you time, agony, frustration. they do live, film, etc.
So, it sounds to me you may not actually be employed by the VA, is that correct? Are you sub-contracted as there are sub-contractors for Medicare?
You wrote, "I am VERY new at this, but I do understand that much." This is why I suggest you get someone who knows what they are doing to help you.
I always say, "No information is bad information."
You write, "But script writing is not my world. The veterans are mine." The veterans are all of our worlds. Thank you for what you do.
Just trying to help you out, by the way. And protect the members on the Forum.
best,

Please see the website http://www.va.gov/healtheligibility if you are interested in what we do.
I am not interested in working with a large professional company. As I mentioned before, it is an attempt to supplement our internal training program. Maybe I will contact some of our local colleges where we could be used as their quinea pigs. That may be a more appropriate forum.

CWray,
Could you post a little information about the types of scripts you're looking for? Are you only looking for scripts specifically on the topic of education? Or are you looking for scripts of all genres?
Thanks also for your willingness to share more information. Speaking only for myself, the only point of your original post that raised a red flag was a credit card. Most of us aren't set up to accept credit cards (except perhaps through PayPal).

Scripts to be used instead of the usual training sessions in a typical business setting. Such as:
Good telephone techniques
Customer Service
Stress
Any type of script that would enforce good managment techniques or leadership
Protecting customer privacy
Hope this helps
