Theatre Limina is now accepting submissions for our annual "Summer
Shorts" festival to be performed at the Bryant Lake
Bowl Cabaret Theatre in Minneapolis, MN in June 2008. This is the
fourth
year of this festival, which emphasizes giving a
voice to emerging playwrights and directors. Theatre Limina's Artistic
Committee will review all submissions; selected scripts
will be paired with a director and given a blackbox performance at the
Bryant Lake Bowl. The selections of the committee are
final.
GUIDELINES:
• Plays should be approximately 20 minutes in performance. Scripts
shorter than 15 or longer than 25 standard pages
will not be considered
• Plays should be written for 4 actors or fewer (though actors may
play
multiple roles).
• The theme for this year is "Summer Shorts: Bermuda Shorts." The
general intent of the "Bermuda Shorts" theme
is to provide a forum for longer shorts and shorter one acts, i.e.
shows
of a length less commonly seen in a festival
setting. As with past years of "Summer Shorts," audience members
will
provide written feedback for each
production and vote for their choice each week to receive a second
performance as part of the "encore night" at the
end of the month.
• Theatre Limina emphasizes the use of physicality in all
productions;
therefore, scripts which allow for this element to
be explored generally stand a greater chance of being selected.
• No more than 2 submissions will be accepted from any one
playwright.
• We welcome any genre, and especially welcome scripts with
"edgy,"
political, and/or socially-conscious subject
matter.
• We encourage playwrights with any level of experience to submit
scripts. We will accept scripts that have received
previous public readings or performances, but we request that
playwrights provide a performance history for each
script and keep in mind the spirit of this festival as an opportunity
to
develop and obtain feedback for scripts.
• No stipend is offered for participating in "Summer Shorts."
• The deadline for submissions is Sunday, March 30th, 2008 at 5:00
PM.
Final selections will be made by April 27th
and all playwrights will be contacted with the results.
SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE:
• Scripts must be submitted via E-mail to Eric Nelson at
SummerShorts08@gmail.com. Include two electronic copies of
each script in Microsoft Word format (.doc) as E-mail attachments, one
bearing your name and contact information,
the other completely devoid of any identifying information. The
selection committee utilizes a "blind" screening
process when reading and discussing all scripts.
• In the text of the E-mail message, include performance history for
each script. If desired, include a brief statement
about yourself as a playwright and what you hope to extract from this
experience.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Plays will be reviewed as submitted; all scripts will be read, but
we
cannot provide feedback on individual scripts.
• Playwrights will retain all rights for their script(s).
• As a part of Theatre Limina's commitment to theatre as a communal
art,
we encourage playwrights to be available for
consultation with their directors. However, directors will have the
final authority in all artistic decisions.
• Playwrights are not eligible to direct their own scripts.
Playwrights
interested in directing for "Summer Shorts" can
apply separately to be matched with another writer's script.
