All right....so our initial scope was too narrow. We've broadened it....
The Walpole Footlighters New Comedy Project
The Walpole Footlighters has extended the deadline and the scope of its New Comedy Project (NCP). The intent of the NCP is to encourage and promote new playwrights. Scripts are now accepted from anywhere (not just New England) and one script will be chosen to receive a staged reading at the Footlighters’ 250-seat theater in August 2008.
Submitted plays must meet the following criteria:
The play must be a comedy. No drama, no musicals, no children’s theater.
The play must be complete. Works in progress will not be considered.
It must be a full-length play with a running time no shorter than one hour and no longer than two hours. No one-acts or collections of short plays.
The play must be previously unproduced. And we WILL be Googling you and your play.
Most importantly, the technical requirements of the play must be in keeping with what would be realistically within the capacities of a community theater. So if your play requires a pirate ship to move across the stage while lasers crisscross the air and actors are flown in from the wings, it’s not going to make it.
Scripts will be judged on comedic value, story/plot quality, and plausibility of staging. Regarding plausibility, the resources of the Footlighters theater will be used as a point of reference.
Deadline for submissions is May 15, 2008. Scripts postmarked after May 15 will not be considered.
Scripts are being accepted in hardcopy format only. No electronic submissions at this time. The playwright’s contact information should appear on the cover page only, and the playwright’s name must not appear anywhere else on the script for blind judging purposes.
Please note: While we would encourage the winning playwright to attend the reading, the Walpole Footlighters cannot make travel or lodging arrangements for out-of-state playwrights. A DVD copy of the reading will be provided to the winner.
