We now have a venue for presenting new plays in the western North Carolina mountains.
Thursday night, April 24th, the Lost Playwrights of Western North Carolina were received by a packed house in the "cabaret/bar" of the (new) Crazy Lady Cafe' in Hendersonville, NC for the maiden performance of what we hope will be a monthly presentation of "an evening of shorts." Seven short plays and four poems were performed to a continual response of laughter and applause.
Following the performance, the owner of the cafe' invited us to return monthly for additional productions and offered two-performance gigs on weekends (probably Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees - we're working that out now).
This intimate setting holds 60 folding chairs or about 45 chairs at tables (my favorite).
This is a great opportunity for playwrights to demonstrate/workshop their new works in progress. Talk-back is available if requested. We can survive doing our own plays for a few months but it would be nice to bring in outside stuff. We're looking for groups willing to bring their short plays to Hendersonville, NC for the weekend when the temperatures in cities like NYC, Atlanta and Memphis are as much as 30 degrees warmer in the summer than they are here. It's a great place for a vacation, or just to live.
At this point, we aren't offering any financial inducement because we're losing more than we make but that will hopefully turn around soon.
We're looking for short plays with few (4 or less) characters and minimal set... the performance space is rather small. Staged readings are fine.
