as it were.  I am working on a play for our local teens.  I want it to be more than the skits they work on in their youth groups and edgier and more contemporary than the plays we do for youth at out community theater.  The thing is, I have enough of an in with the local theater and our teen community that I could pull this off if I could just get it written.  I want it to be real, not over the top depression drama, but about real teens.  Should be able to do it since I live with three of them and have two youth groups.  So anyway here I am.  Make me work.

Cool.  Welcome.

Why not start here.  Write a letter from a teen to another teen describing his parents and all their boring adultness.

Just a good exercise to get you into the groove, as it were.

Firstly, Welcome.

Make you work?  Okay.  Write a short play of a couple pages and post it in Paddy's Gym then hang back and, if you are lucky,  she'll crack her whip and help you get your work into shape--that is, if it needs it and chances are it'll need it.

You asked.  Now do it!

Hi,

Perhaps get your own teens to help you.  My teenaged niece writes plays, and they are indeed edgier than what adults tend to imagine for kids.

Two of the best actors I ever saw were young teenagers in the RSC.  Never underestimate teenagers, children, or babies.

well, if you're writing about teens - maybe hang out with some of them for real. Not 'youth group' teens, or your own (who all may well be 'well behaved because they're around an adult authority figure') - but other teens, perhaps better examples of the majority of teens, who perhaps aren't as well behaved in their speech, views or actions, as you might be used to..

if you're able to, step into their world after hours - and soak up what their concerns are, and their perspectives on their reality.. that might give you a whole bunch of insights and ways of telling interesting stories that honestly connect with teens in a way that makes sense to all of them..

(in my view) one doesn't get the full picture (or the often raw and interesting dialogs that teens have when by themselves) just because one happens to be sharing living space with some of them, or making contact at youth groups.. To me, a view of teens seen via that narrow perspective, isnt enough to give a good view of 'teens in the wild' so to speak :)

/my two cents worth :)

You might encourage the teens to write their own play.  No holds barred, no censorship.  You might.
