I'm back after a vacation from writing so I could move and downsize my entire life it seems! I was terribly blocked, writing wise, for a while, but now am writing lots of very short stories and poetry. I still want to write a play, and have bits and pieces of old ones I wrote, but I'm bored with those, or the ideas just don't seem "good" enough.
I have a somewhat finished version of the Cinderella story that I'd like to do something with, but I'm not quite sure where to go with it at this point.
I know better than to ask, but how do the rest of you come up with good, solid ideas for plays? Any tips, or tricks?
Good to be back!

Hello, bobbie...welcome back to the world of writing.
As for ideas...I truly believe you must write what you're passionate about. It may be inspired by deep longing you've had, a political opinion, a book or poem you've read, a flim, a song, a friend, an enemy, a family member, a stranger. You never know where the Muse will take you.
I think the best cure for writer's block is just to write. Rambling on the page, stream of consciousness, etc...soon you'll get your groove back.
Another thing that helps me when I'm stuck creatively is to read stories, poetry and plays...it really gets my juices going.

Hi Luana,
Thanks! I am writing a lot of poetry and short stream of consciousness type literary stuff, but they don't seem good enough (or maybe complete enough) to me to be plays. I'll admit, though, that I need to read a LOT more plays to see what's out there, what kinds of ideas are turned into plays. I've read a lot of them over the years, but need to read more contemporary ones, too.
Perhaps some of my stuff could be turned into monologues? I've never thought about that before. It's a thought...
Off to do more reading!

When a play writes itself, it's because the story 'has' to be told.
Welcome, Bobbi.

Thanks for the welcome, Paddy! Good to be back. Actually, some of my short pieces I write do seem to write themselves. This morning I've been looking back at several of them, and think they could be turned into short plays. I have learned that I like writing shorter stuff, so I'm making progress. I think.
I'm trying to find some short comedy and/or mystery plays to read now. We just saw The Hollow by Agatha Christie the other night, and that's spurred me on. I have written one mystery novel, so I'm partial to those.
Any suggestions for contemporary shorter mystery plays to read?
Thanks!

Hi Bobbichukran,
Cinderella? How could anybody make a play out of Cinderella?
But of course!!!! There's a great conflict between feminine women like Cinderella who fall in love with men like the prince -- women for whom the shoe fits -- and those bitchy sisters with the big clodhopper feet [like men's feet] -- women who are men bashers.
A love story! Yes!!!
Hello. I just want to say hello.
