LET'S GET TALKING!!!!

In Medea Res, DWolfman and Limerick decided maybe a 'time' set in the Green Room for a chat each week, might work.  (Farmer, you may have to update your Java to get into the Green Room)

They came up with this...

Every Thursday from 5pm to 8pm Eastern North American time will be an unofficial Green Room gathering. Everyone’s schedules are helter-skelter, but we’ll see what happens.

After this week, my time is more mine...but I think I can be there for a bit this week.

Let's give it a try.

I wrote Samuel French to complain about their antiquated "Guidelines" and they actually responded... and told me they are (at this time) revising them.

The finished guidelines will supposedly be posted "online and free" when finished.

Meanwhile, I can show anyone how to use MS Word to format any script they want - no need to download or pay for any special scripting programs.

For whatever my opinion is worth, I can vouch for Sam's template.

I've tested it and it works. It's so simple, I had a "d-oh" moment. You can type your script the way you want and then simply apply his formula to each bit of text or go with his template from the start (recommended).

CHARACTER

Dialogue.

Stage Directions

Put the word character name on the page, exactly where you always want it to be.  Caps.  Centered + one inch, wherever you are used to putting it.  Formatting does vary from country to country and playwright to playwright.

  • Click Format at the top.

  • You’ll get a screen to your right.

  • Select the word character

  • Click new style.

  • Give it a name – I call mine Play 1 which is the character.

  • Click add to template.

  • Click format

  • Click Shortcut key

  • Press something like ctrl 1

  • Click Assign

  • Click Close

Now put Dialogue on your page where you would have the dialogue start.  Go through the process again, only call is Play 2, or dialogue or something. Do the same with stage directions.

Each shortcut code should be different.

Now, when you are at the character line, hit ctrl 1 and it sets you up...you don’t even have to hit the caps lock, it does it all.

Go to the dialogue line, hit ctrl 2 and it sets you up for dialogue.

Play around with the modify style button – once you’ve set the styles.  In Paragraph, you’ll be able to set things like keep with next, which won’t break up dialogue from one page to the next.

I’ve meant to copy this out for a while.  Hope this helps.  Any questions?

Well I just started typing and it's brillo. it's free.  some one on this site said they used it so I went looking for it.  Typed out 15 pages of the Play today.  It's very easy and that's coming from someone who hasn't a clue about software

I just use MS Word. I have final draft, but I save that for screenplays. Main reason being Word is universally accepted while Final Draft is not.

And my formatting is pretty simple. There are any number that are considered acceptable, so for me the easiest is the best.
