* Submitted plays must explore scientific and/or technological stories, themes, issues and/or events. Science and technology must figure prominently in the script, whether in form or content or both. Biographical dramas, history plays, and medical dramas are discouraged unless they significantly employ science and/or technology. Authors are strongly urged to avoid the stereotypes often assigned to science, technology, and those who engage in these disciplines. This competition is not open to plays written in the genre of science fiction.
Specific eligibility requirements:
1. All plays must be original, full-length (minimum running time: 70 minutes), and submitted in English.
2. Plays that have been published, received or begun a full-fledged production (i.e., first preview has occurred), or been reviewed prior to the submission deadline are not eligible. Plays that have had readings or a workshop are acceptable.
3. Plays or theatre pieces incorporating multi-media are eligible and encouraged, as is material presented in a new form or not entirely script-based. In these cases, authors must submit an artistic statement that describes such elements in detail. Those working with/in multi-media/new forms must also submit samples of the visual/aural interpretation of the
piece, e.g., sketches, slides, DVD, CD, or the like. To enable adequate evaluation, authors must explain such works in a clear and understandable manner.
4. Collaborations are eligible.
5. Original material based on an existing published work or the like may be submitted if the author(s): are the owners of the existing published work, or have written permission from the author and owner of the existing published work to adapt this work for the stage and a copy of this written permission accompanies the submission of the play and all supporting materials. Any adaptations that do not fulfill these requirements are not eligible.
6. Authors may submit only one script per contest cycle.
7. Scripts submitted in a previous contest cycle may be resubmitted only if: they have been significantly re-written, i.e., more than 50% of the script must be substantially changed from the previous submission, and they have been submitted only once before. No script may be resubmitted a third time.
8. No musicals, translations or screenplays are being accepted at this time.
9. Those involved in any aspect of the STAGE Script Competition application or review process are not eligible to enter.
The winning play will be announced on our website in July, 2008. The winning author will be notified directly, prior to public notification. Scripts will be judged by an esteemed panel of jurors.
All submissions must include: 1) A cover letter. 2) Completed entry form, as follows: Please submit the entry form online. After you click on the “Submit Entry Form” button on our website, a confirmation page will appear on your screen. Please print out this confirmation page and mail it in with your script copies and other submission materials. 3) A separate one-page (maximum) synopsis of the script. 4) A separate written statement regarding: the specific manner in which the play relates to the fields of science and/or technology; how the play has developed up to the present (including information about the artistic evolution of the play and its ideas, as well as information regarding past readings, workshops, etc.); and how the author(s) envision the future development of the script and the culmination of this work. 5) A bio/resume for each author. 6) Three (3) copies of the play, in English. Since scripts will be read as blind submissions, the title pages on all copies of the play must include only the name of the play and the year in which it was written. Identification and/or the name(s) of the author(s) must not appear anywhere on the scripts. Each script must include a list of characters or a cast breakdown.

CURTAIN CALL, INC. (CT)
Date: 9-22-07 (Postmarked by)
Material: New Musicals that dramatize an aspect of the experience of Black Americans
Curtain Call, Inc., Fairfield County, Connecticut’s premiere community-based theatre, announces the establishment of what the organization hopes will become an annual award to celebrate diversity in the musical theater.
The American Harmony Prize: The goal of the American Harmony Prize is to showcase new works of musical theater that explore our country’s many ethnic, religious and gender identifications. To do so, the prize will be awarded each year to the writers of a new musical that delves into a different specific segment of American society.
The inaugural American Harmony Prize (the funding of which was made possible by the Puffin Foundation) will showcase a new musical that dramatizes an aspect of the experience of Black Americans. In addition to a cash award of $250.00, a condensed version of the winning musical (approximately one hour in length) will be performed as a part of Curtain Call’s series of new musicals in concert. The concert reading will take place at the Ethel and Sidney Kweskin Theater in Stamford, Connecticut, in February of 2008.
Musical theater writers interested in having their work considered for the American Harmony Prize should submit a plot synopsis of no more than 800 words (or roughly two pages), the first 10 pages of the libretto (with all dialogue, lyrics and stage directions included), a CD that demonstrates as much of the musical’s score as has been recorded to date (it needn’t be of studio quality) and one sample of the sheet music for a song from the show’s piano / vocal score. A “short list” of applicants will be contacted after the first round of judging and asked to submit a full libretto and additional samples of the piano / vocal score for the final consideration. There is no submission / reading fee. Applicants that wish to have their materials returned should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
In order to qualify for consideration, a musical cannot have been professionally produced (Equity Dinner, LORT, Production, Special Production, SPT, Stock, etc…) or published, but it may have been performed in readings, concerts, workshops and non-professional productions.
Submissions will be accepted via mail from Monday, August 6, 2007 until Saturday, September 22, 2007 . Submissions postmarked after Saturday, September 22, 2007, will not be eligible for consideration. We are not able to receive electronic submissions at this time.
Submissions should be mailed to: Curtain Call, Inc., 1349 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905, Att. American Harmony Prize .

Hawthornicopia, scheduled for January 15th through January 28th, 2008, is a collection of new plays to celebrate the spirit of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Submissions will be considered for co-production in the festival, and are welcome from individual artists and performance companies alike. Co-producers will take responsibility for conceiving and creating their contribution (i.e. artistic work) to the festival, with use of Metropolitan’s space and physical resources. Metropolitan will coordinate and promote the festival as a part of its 16th Season: “Virtue.” We publicize the festival, though if the company/artist wish to further publicize their individual contribution, then they incur additional costs. We do not charge rent for the space, and we offer the space for rehearsals (shared among the many participants as equitably/appropriately as we can), but additional rehearsal space rental would mean additional cost to the participant. In like manner, any special properties or set pieces that we do not have on site would also create costs.... On the other hand, we have insurance for the artists and audience. We take care of box office operations and basic lighting plot.
Submissions may be ten-minute plays, one-acts, or full length performances. There are no restrictions concerning style. Adaptations, biographies, fantasies, treatises will all be considered. Selection by Metropolitan Playhouse will be based on artistic quality, feasibility of production, and suitability for the venue.
Guidelines: Submissions will be accepted by e-mail or snail mail, and must include:
1. Cover sheet with
* Name of Company/Artist taking responsibility for producing the work
* Project Title
* Hawthorn-ishness (ie. relation to Hawthorne or his work)

2. Project narrative of no more than 2 pages
3. Key artist biographies and, if applicable, company history
