UMBC Announces the 3rd Annual 10-Minute Play Festival
New Theatrical Works for Young Actresses and All Audiences
DEADLINE: Oct. 1, 2007
Featuring the winning play from the IN10 National Play Competition and a new short play for young actresses by noted American playwright.
Deadline:
October 1, 2007
Winners announced:
December 15, 2007
Festival Performances:
March 5-9, 2007
THE COMPETITION
As the cornerstone for our IN10 FESTIVAL, the UMBC Department of Theatre seeks 10-minute plays written for female characters age 16 to 30 that feature clearly defined roles for young women.
We strongly encourage playwrights to create a wide variety of roles representing young women from all social classes, ethnic backgrounds and in all kinds of physical bodies. We are most interested in scripts that explore relationships between women through roles that are not widely available in contemporary play texts.
Since there is a dearth of texts for young female actors, we plan to edit an anthology of much needed 10-minute texts for young actresses. We anticipate that this text will be used in colleges and universities across the country.
THE APPLICATION FORM
We ask that you use this form so that we might read these scripts as blind submissions. Please be sure the author’s name appears only on the application cover page. Also we are asking each writer to provide us with the basic action of the play because we are looking specifically for conflict driven drama.
An example of a concise basic action is as follows:
“Manager” is about Charlie (18), the only child of a single mother dying from breast cancer whose only wish is to die at home. In order to keep her promise, Charlie must convince a social worker, Rita (25), that she can care for her mother. Rita has just graduated with her MSW and is caught between her desire to assist Charlie and her supervisor’s insistence that the family will be best served in the hospital system.
Please download and complete the application form here.
THE PROCESS
Please send one copy of the script along with a completed two-page application form to:
Professor Susan McCully
10-Minute Play Competition
UMBC Department of Theatre
1000 Hilltop Circle
Baltimore, MD 21250
THE PRIZE
The winning play will be granted a $1,000 prize and a staged reading at the IN10 Festival March 5-9, 2008, as well as top consideration for the planned anthology.

IN10 10-MINUTE PLAY COMPETITION AND FESTIVAL NEW THEATRICAL WORKS FOR YOUNG ACTRESSES AND ALL AUDIENCES (MD)
Date: 10-01-07 (Postmarked by)
Material: 10-Minute Plays written for female characters age 16 to 35
As the cornerstone for our IN10 FESTIVAL, the UMBC Department of Theatre seeks 10-minute plays written for female characters age 16 to 35 that feature clearly defined roles for young women. We are looking for scripts that address the complex relationships between women. Our festival focuses on the underrepresented needs, goals, responsibilities and desires of women under thirty-five.
The IN10 Festival seeks scripts with no limit of historical period, genre or subject matter. We want scripts that represent universal human experiences with young women as the principle actors.
For best consideration:
--The play should have both a female antagonist and protagonist.
--The play need not have all female characters, but the dramatic action
and dialogue should focus on the young female characters.
--The text must not be a monologue--NO MONOLOGUE PLAYS. We are looking
specifically for scenes that contain dramatic actions between female
characters.
There is a $1,000 prize for the script that best achieves this mission. Four to six scripts will be selected for public performances in March of 2008.
THE COMPETITION
We strongly encourage playwrights to create a wide variety of roles representing young women from all social classes, ethnic backgrounds and in all kinds of physical bodies. We are most interested in scripts that explore relationships between women as these roles that are not widely available in contemporary play texts
THE APPLICATION FORM
We ask that you use this form so that we might read these scripts anonymously. Please be sure the author’s name appears only on the application cover page. Also, we are asking each writer to provide us with the basic action of the play because we are looking specifically for conflict driven drama.
