needcompany, LA, seeks short/longer plays
Posted:1/3/07
Playwrights want their work to be read and produced after all, do we not?
I am a playwright and the Literary Manager of needcompany, a new LA-basedtheater group. Our website is being re-vamped, but you can view our old site at http://www.needcompanytheaat http://www.needcompanytheater.com. We are now launching a series to bring a fresh crop of writers into our growing artistic community, help them develop their work through a public workshop presentation, and prepare material for possible mainstage productions in the future.
needcompany is dedicated to invigorating the Los Angeles theater scene with edgy, provocative ideas; and playwrights are after all the architects of theatrical ideas. So please look over our Script Submission Policy pasted below and send us your good stuff. I look forward to hearing from you all.
Yours,
Matt B. Wells

Submission Policy:
As part of our firm commitment to presenting new work, needcompany continually accepts script submissions from playwrights and/or their representatives. In order to foster working relationships with new artists, aid scripts in their development process, and prepare shows for
possible turns on our mainstage, in 2007 needcompany is launching an ongoing series of workshops and staged readings.
We accept submissions for both short plays and full-length works. We seek pieces that push the boundaries of LA Theater convention: the edgy, the absurd, the socially significant, the multi-cultural, the lovely, the ugly, the absurd, the poetic, the prosaic, the fringe, the indie.
In order for your submission to receive consideration, please send:
1. A cover letter complete with a brief synopsis and production/reading history of the piece as well as the playwright's current contact information, especially an email address.
2. The playwright's artistic resume, if applicable.
3. One copy of the entire play script, complete with a title page that also includes the contact information.

NEW GEORGES
We produce heightened, theatrical, generally pretty non-naturalistic work written by women.
New Georges is interested in developing long-term, productive relationships with women artists who share our vision of theater, and we support these artists and facilitate their work in many ways. To that end, New Georges accepts submissions less with an eye toward production than with the understanding that we're opening a conversation between artist and company.

NEW PLAYS INC.
SEEKING PLAYS FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES
Deadline: ongoing
New Plays specializes in plays for young audiences (pre-school through middle and high school) and books for teachers using the arts in education. The plays are primarily for teens and adults to perform for children. We are small by choice, and add only a few new titles each year.
NEEDS: I look for good writing, strong characterization, well-developed themes, honesty and integrity, plays that challenge both performers and young people. I look for plays that have substance, but are not didactic. I stay away from plays that pound specific issues, such as drug abuse or teen pregnancy, and I look for material that sounds like it has been written by a playwright, not a guidance counselor.
Plays must have been performed before, and directed by someone other than the playwright. Submit one play at a time.

NEW SOUNDS THEATRE’S SANDBOX SERIES
Playwrights wanted for musical development
New Sounds Theatre is seeking submissions for its groundbreaking Sandbox series, which pairs new play readings with performances by a guest composer (provided by our New Sounds "matchmakers").
We are seeking non-musical plays that show potential for the use of original music, as well as more complete music-theatre pieces that are further along in their development. More traditional musicals are welcome, though we’re really looking for material that blurs the lines a little.
We are also seeking songwriters and composers who want to explore their theatrical side. No prior theatre experience is necessary. Please email us for more info about how to get involved.
Playwrights, please send a cover letter, resume, synopsis and 15- page writing sample to:
New Sounds Theatre
470 Eastern Parkway, #3B
Brooklyn, NY 11225
Or email to: russell@newsoundstheatre.org

THE YORK THEATRE COMPANY (NY)
Material: Musicals
The York Theatre Company’s Developmental Reading Series presents some 40 readings and workshops of new musicals by emerging and established authors throughout the year, free of charge to the public and the writers. These readings are a vital part of the writing process. Post-performance discussions are occasionally held with audiences. This series also serves as an incubator for shows to be considered for Mainstage production, thus serving the York’s unique mission of taking new musicals through the complete development process to full production.
Would you like to submit a show for inclusion in the Developmental Reading Series? Our mission here at York concerns musicals only; we do not accept submissions of plays. A completed script must be submitted, as well as a sound recording of at least most of the songs. If you’d like your materials returned, you must enclose a self-addressed, postage-paid envelope.
As we are one of the only theatres in the country which accepts unsolicited scripts, we receive around 400-500 scripts per year. We pride ourselves on properly evaluating each script, which takes time as we have a small staff and a loyal group of volunteer readers. It generally takes at least 6 to 12 months to get a script through our entire process.
Material should be submitted to:
York Theatre Company

619 Lexington Avenue
New York, NY 10022

PREGONES THEATER’S ASUNCIÓN PLAYWRIGHTS PROJECT
Deadline: On or before December 23 of each year
Asunción showcases the work of Latino playwrights exploring issues of difference and transformation at the limits of queer identity. The project especially seeks works that challenge assumptions about gender and sexuality.
Asunción organizes three to four public readings of plays each season at Pregones’ Casa Blanca. This is an intimate setting where the readings are followed by an open discussion between the playwright, audience members and artists. The plays are selected by Pregones' Artistic Directors from works submitted to the company.
The selection process is made up of two preliminary rounds. The first round is open to any author interested in submitting his/her work. A completed application form must be submitted together with a 10-page sample of the work. The second round is by invitation only. A selected group of finalists are invited to submit their work in its entirety for final consideration. The public readings are selected from this group of finalists. Asunción organizes and promotes the readings, and offers administrative support and rehearsal space towards the reading.
Playwrights are invited to submit original, full-length works for the stage that have never been produced and are not under option.
