WARNING

When a theatre is asking for a full-length play that has not been previously produced and does not state up front that they are providing anything to the playwright other than the privilege of having your play produced on their stage, think twice.  Remember that once you have your play produced it is no longer eligible for contests and theatres looking for original, unproduced work that may pay substantially.  Remember, when it comes to play production, you're only a virgin once.

* * * * * * * * * *

Any submission opportunity that calls for a fee from our members is considerad an ad and we do not post ads of any type in this forum.  Should you run across any opp requesting a fee, please let me know and I will remove it immediately.

* * * * * * * * * *

Here's a tip for you.  Go through the old opps going back to last year and earlier this year.  Chances are many of those theatres are running the same deadlines this year.  Check their websites or email them to see if they are.

THE DARIEN PLAYERS
The Darien Players Unplugged
Deadlines: 4-1-2008 (for May session); 6-1-2008 (for July session)

Putting a new face and name on The Actors/Playwrights Workshop that has been part of The Darien Players’ program for many years, this newly rebranded “workshop” is poised to help bring more new material to the stage.

The goal of The Darien Players Unplugged is to both foster the development of new works for the stage (both short form and full length) and to give actors a chance to hone their craft in a way they don’t normally do so.
Writers will be able to submit one-acts or excerpts from longer works (no more than 20 pages). A program will be put together by a “Director” of no more than five submissions for each session. The program will be free for audiences (with a suggested donation for entry) and will run no more than two hours with an opportunity after each piece for interaction between the writer, the actors and the audiences.
This “workshop” is designed to give the writer an opportunity to hear what their work sounds like as well as get feedback from people on how to improve the piece. Material brought by the writer can be a short play, an excerpt from a longer play (one-act or full-length) or even pages from a screenplay or novel. One of the things we will NOT do is tell a writer what their piece should be, only to help a writer realize its full potential. When it comes time for the staged readings, if the work is still an excerpt or in a rough form, we will set up the situation for the audience via an MC (the director).
If you are a writer and are interested, please e-mail tdpunplugged@optonline.net to register for any session.
For full details on session dates, please visit http://arts.darien.org/players/playersAuditions.php.

TADA! YOUTH THEATER
One-Act Playwriting Contest
Deadline: 4-25-2008 (postmark)

Although young people have the final say as to “what’s hot” in music, fashion, movies and other pop culture essentials, they remain underrepresented in the world of theater—both as performers and as the subject of new plays. In an attempt to serve more teens and youth with work that speaks to their needs and experiences, TADA! Youth Theater is currently accepting submissions for its 2007-08 Annual One-Act Playwriting Contest. The contest accepts work written for two age groups—Teen actors and audiences & Youth actors and audiences (under 13).

A total of four playwrights will be selected to receive an award from either TADA!’s “Young Writers” or “General Submission” Category. All winners will be announced September 29, 2008. Winning playwrights receive the Gregory Millard Memorial Playwriting Award, which includes an honorarium, and a staged reading of their play as part of TADA!’s 17th Annual Free Staged Reading Series, which takes place in Summer ’09. In addition, winning playwrights have the option to have their play included in TADA! Originals, a script rental catalogue.
Each play is minimally staged in five to seven rehearsals with the actors performing the play on-book. Following each reading, the audience participates in a talk-back session with the playwright, director and the actors.
Submission Guidelines:
• Plays must be submitted in one of the two categories: “Young Writers” for playwrights 19 and under, or “General Submission” for playwrights over 19.
• Scripts must be original, unproduced and unpublished one-act plays for either Teen actors and audiences or Youth actors and audiences (under 13).
• Plays must address issues that are relevant to today’s teen/youth experience; however, the setting does not have to be contemporary. Comedies are encouraged.
• Cast must be primarily actors ages 10 to 19. Limit two adults per cast. Teens will not play adults; adult actors will be hired.
• Musicals are not accepted for this contest but can be submitted to TADA! separately.
• Plays with animals and non-human characters are highly discouraged.
• Writers may submit more than one play.
• Do not submit loose scripts or scripts in binders. Scripts should be bound by a staple or a binder clip.
What to Submit:
• A completed entry form
• A short bio of the playwright (100 words or less)
• Four copies of the play
• A character breakdown with brief descriptions including age
• Proof of age if you are submitting your play in the “Young Writers” category (School ID, letter from parent verifying age, etc.)
• Please note: Any materials mailed to TADA! will not be returned.
