| WARNING When a theatre is asking for a full-length play that has not been previously produced and does not state up front that they are providing anything to the playwright other than the privilege of having your play produced on their stage, think twice. Remember that once you have your play produced it is no longer eligible for contests and theatres looking for original, unproduced work that may pay substantially. Remember, when it comes to play production, you're only a virgin once.

INSPIRATO FESTIVAL THE 3RD
ANNUAL TORONTO TEN MINUTE PLAY FESTIVAL (CANADA)
Date: 01-07-08 (Emailed by midnight)
Material: 10min. Plays, with the element of ‘Sense of smell”
Here’s what we need from you, our potential playwright:
A script of a ten-minute play (no shorter than 8 minutes and no longer than 12 minutes). The sense of smell must be an important element of the play. Of all the senses smell is the body’s highest survival sense and one most intimately associated with evoking memories and emotions. Just think how quickly a certain scent can transport you back in time.
New or previously produced plays will be considered.
To submit your play go to http://www.inspiratofestival.ca/
Fill in the submission form. Attach your script in a WORD Document. A sense of smell must be an important element of your play. The cover page should only have the title of the play, the playwright’s name and the list of characters. The pages should be numbered.
There is no submission fee. You may only enter one play (so make it count). You will be notified by January 21, 2008 if your play has been selected. If selected, your play will be performed at the Alchemy Theatre in Toronto, Canada from May 1 to 10, 2008. Each playwright, whose play is selected, will receive $100 (CDN). 12-14 plays will be selected. If your play is selected, you will receive a full production of five performances. The Inspirato Festival will find the cast, crew and market your play.
Should your play be selected for inclusion in the festival, you are giving the non-exclusive right to the Inspirato Festival to produce and perform the play from May 1 to May 10, 2008. You retain the right to publish your play through any other publishing agents and perform it in any other venues you desire. This is open to everyone without age and geographic restriction. We will read your script provided it meets the guidelines (we are playwrights who understand the hard work you put into your play).
*Tips for Writing Your Ten-Minute Play:
Write what inspires you first and then see if there are elements in your play where you can have the characters evoke a specific smell. Alternatively you can start with a certain smell that evokes memories or triggers your imagination. For example, you can have the smell of coffee as an important element of your play. The aroma of coffee is referred to throughout the play but the play doesn’t have to be about coffee. The coffee aroma helps illuminate the message, theme or premise of the play. On average you have 10,000 different senses of smell in your memory - so consider the simple smell of your washed bedroom sheets or the smell of fresh cut grass or the intoxicating smell of gasoline and everything in between.

The LBDA is conducting a nationwide search for a playwright who will craft a dramatic presentation of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency, with the message that our 16th president’s character was forged here in southern Indiana.

This new play will open in June of 2009 as part of our nation’s celebration of the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth.

WALKING FISH THEATER’S RADIO DRAMA PERFORMANCE SERIES (PA)
Date: 01-15-08 (Postmarked by)
Material: One-Act (30 min) and Full Length (60 min) Radio Plays
Radio plays selected for the Walking Fish Theater’s Radio Drama performances will be performed before a live/studio and broadcast audience and may be replayed via broadcast, internet radio, internet video, or podcast. In addition, we will also broadcast the performances live via internet radio. Remember that in a radio drama, you do not have the privilege of seeing anything. Therefore, all information must be delivered through sound cues and effects. A good radio drama does not depend heavily on long stretches of dialogue. Rather it is up to the radio dramatist to dig deep into their creative reserves and figure out how to do with sound what is typically accomplished with visual cues. There is no entry fee for the competition and there are no rules as to the content of the plays. We do ask that you format your piece properly. We suggest following the guidelines listed here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/scriptsmart/bbcradioscene.pdf
Please be sure to include a title page with the work’s title plus the writer’s name and contact information, a cast list, and a short synopsis (1-3 sentences) of your radio play. Send a single hardcopy of the script.

CHAUTAUQUA THEATER COMPANY
New Play Workshop
Deadline: 1-31-2008
Chautaqua Theater Company is the resident professional theater and Conservatory of the renowned Chautauqua Institution in western New York. In 2005 we began the New Play Workshop series to put new play development at the core of our mission as a company and to engage with the broader intellectual ambitions of the Institution. At Chautauqua, each week is given a theme around which the Institution' s celebrated morning lecture series is oriented. CTC/NPW plays are chosen to reflect the theme of the week in which they are performed. While we don't choose the themes, we are committed to finding plays that will engage with these ideas. The first 2008 workshop (July 7 to July 11) should correspond to the theme "On Writing" and the second (July 28 to August 1) should reflect on "Healing the Globe."
The workshops rehearse for four days and are performed three times in CTC's 269-seat Bratton Theater. The readings receive technical support and are cast with a combination of guest artists and CTC's Conservatory (a talented company of 14 actors assembled from the nation's top training programs). The playwright is expected to be in residence for the entire week. Travel, housing, and an honorarium are provided.
The platform themes are broadly articulated and might easily accommodate a range of plays from the intimate and personal to the global and political. Submitted plays should be as yet unrealized in full production and unpublished, although plays already slated for production in the coming year or previously workshopped at other venues are perfectly acceptable.
Along with the script, we ask that you submit a synopsis, a character or roles breakdown, and a brief bio or resume.
To submit by mail, please send materials to:

Deadline: 1-30-2008 (receipt)
ATHE's Playwright's Program is seeking new, short plays for its nineteenth annual New Play Development Workshop at the ATHE Conference in Denver July 31-August 3, 2008. Playwrights are invited to submit plays ranging in length from 4-10 minutes (scripts over 10 minutes will not be accepted); there is no restriction on subject matter, style, or intended audience. Six to eight scripts will be selected by a jury of readers. Each playwright will be assigned a director, a dramaturg, scenographer, and a group of actors; these creative teams will work on the scripts throughout the four-day conference for an average of two to three hours per day (attendance at the rest of the ATHE conference is possible and encouraged). The Workshop will culminate in a public, script-in-hand reading of the plays in a showcase of scripts on Sunday, August 3.
The New Play Development Workshop affords playwrights the opportunity to work on their scripts with artists from all over the country who are experienced in dealing with original material and to have their work presented at a major academic theatre conference. In past years, plays which have gone through this process have achieved a high rate of success in securing subsequent productions and publication.
Script submissions should include four copies of the script, along with a cover letter which indicates the playwright's willingness to attend ALL sessions of the workshop, from Wednesday evening, July 30, through Sunday afternoon, August 3; the letter should also include the playwright's mailing address and telephone/fax/e-mail numbers. Only one submission per playwright will be accepted. Scripts will not be returned. The list of accepted plays will be sent to all who submitted scripts via email by April 1, 2008. To be considered for the NPDW, scripts must be received by January 30, 2008; late entries will not be read. Scripts should be sent to:
