WARNING

When a theatre is asking for a full-length play that has not been previously produced and does not state up front that they are providing anything to the playwright other than the privilege of having your play produced on their stage, think twice.  Remember that once you have your play produced it is no longer eligible for contests and theatres looking for original, unproduced work that may pay substantially.  Remember, when it comes to play production, you're only a virgin once.

* * * * * * * * * *

Any submission opportunity that calls for a fee from our members is considerad an ad and we do not post ads of any type in this forum.  Should you run across any opp requesting a fee, please let me know and I will remove it immediately.

* * * * * * * * * *

Here's a tip for you.  Go through the old opps going back to last year and earlier this year.  Chances are many of those theatres are running the same deadlines this year.  Check their websites or email them to see if they are.

At Hand Theatre is looking for you to help us out once again by being involved in our Spring fundraising theatrical event POP! Last May many of you were involved in POP! - a fantastic evening of theatre focusing on new one act plays (peppered with dance, song and comedy). POP's brief run was wildly successful. POP!: Riffs, rants and ramblings on the current state of pop-cultural affairs was a fun, irreverent and timely evening of theatre. Not to mention the proceeds of POP! helped us to produce our first mainstage show last season.
So here we are once again, hoping that you'll start scratching your head, grab a laptop, desktop, IBM Selectric, Underwood, pencil, pen, or etch - a- sketch and come up with something wonderful to contribute to May '08's return of POP! Like last year we hope to cultivate an evening that it is fun, energetic, diverse and thought provoking as these are some of the core values of At Hand.
If you would like to participate (and we will love you forever for it) please have a somewhat near to final piece (old or new) by FEBRUARY 1ST!!!
FURTHER GUIDELINES!!!!
- The rules are: There are no rules
- Length, style, etc are up to you. We want to you to give us whatever you got, whether it be a short play, a song, a monologue, a sketch, poem or a sentence.

NEW WORKS FOR YOUNG WOMEN
University of Tulsa
Deadline: 2-8-2008 (received)

The University of Tulsa (TU) is the sponsor of New Works for Young Women. This new competition is intended to increase the number of quality plays and roles for female performers of college age.
Competition Requirements:
1. The play must be an unproduced/unpublished script. Plays which have been previously produced or published professionally are not acceptable (this includes any situation in which an admission fee has been charged: staged readings, community theatre performances, etc.). Plays that have received college/university productions and/or have been published in a college/university literary journal or magazine will be accepted.
2. There is no restriction on the age, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, or ethnicity of the playwright. The play must be authored by a student enrolled in a graduate theatre program at the time of submission. Co-authored works are acceptable, provided both authors are currently enrolled graduate students. Entrants and winners from previous years may enter as long as they are still in graduate school. (Note: Student status must be verified at the time of submission with the inclusion of the contact information for either the playwriting instructor or department chairperson.)
3. The play must have a cast that is either all-female or majority female in the principle roles. The primary roles must be within a reasonable age range (16-35, approximately) for female university actors; secondary roles may be older or younger.
4. The play may be a full-length or long one-act (minimum running time of one hour). No adaptations or translations. Musical theatre and works for young audiences are acceptable. Writers may submit a maximum of two plays.
5. There are no restrictions on genre, style, language, subject matter, cast size, ethnicity, locale or period. Writers should keep in mind, however, that the work is potentially for university production and budgets for technical/scenic requirements may be limited.
6. Submission requirements: Send three (3) copies of the play. Manuscripts must be securely bound with brads, printed cleanly in standard format. Do not use a cover; paper will be recycled. The name(s) of the playwright(s) should only appear on the title page; works will be read as blind submissions. Please be sure to include all phone numbers, e-mail address, and postal address. If you wish to be notified of receipt of the play, include a self-addressed, stamped postcard with your submission. Scripts will not be returned.
7. The playwright must be willing to have an excerpt of their play posted on The University of Tulsa website if their play wins any place in the competition. This is to give universities and theatres around the country the opportunity to see a portion of each work, to encourage contact with the playwright for the full script. The playwright gets to select the portion to be posted (up to 20 pages), and is asked to provide a brief synopsis, bio and contact information.
8. Submission deadline (not postmark) is Friday, February 8, 2008. Plays received after this date will not be considered. Award Notification date: March 24, 2008.
9. The first-place play will be optioned for first production or public reading by the TU Theatre Department. TU may also elect to option the other plays. All rights will return to the playwright after the production or reading. The playwright(s) whose work is optioned will be invited to the TU campus to attend the production or reading, and to provide a workshop or lecture on a topic of the playwright’s choosing (in consultation with the project director) for students at the university. Transportation, housing and meals will be provided.
10. Prizes: First place $1,000; Second place $500; Third and Fourth place $250 each. A number of Honorable Mentions may be selected each year.

ICICLE CREEK THEATRE FESTIVAL
Leavenworth, WA

Deadline: 2-15-2008 (postmark)
The Icicle Creek Theare Festival of new plays affords all artist-participants a unique opportunity to work creatively in an extraordinarily beautiful natural setting. ICTF will again provide two to three new playwrights the opportunity to develop their plays as they live, work and share meals with professional directors and actors (a balance of Equity and non-Equity). The workshop will culminate in partially-staged, script-in-hand presentations on the final weekend.
The 2008 ICTF is tentatively scheduled for nine days, August 9-17, 2008 (subject to change). ICTF will again take place at Icicle Creek Music Center and Sleeping Lady Mountain Retreat in Leavenworth, in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. ICTF currently selects two to three projects for the Festival. Artists can only submit one application each year; previous applicants may re-apply.
ICTF seeks writers who are interested in genuinely exploring their material. ICTF offers an environment that encourages and supports experimentation, re-imagining, and rigorous RE-WRITING. If you feel your work is done except for minor tweaking, this would not be the place for you.
ICTF welcomes applications for projects at any stage of development, but focuses on work that is ready to be explored, at least in part, on its feet. Playwrights who submit their work MUST commit themselves to be available and in residence for all 9 days of the Festival. ICTF's support to playwrights includes providing professional actors, dramaturgs, rehearsal space, stage management, round-trip transportation, shared resort lodging, meals, and an honorarium of $500. All artists, including playwrights, reside in very large modern cabins.
Before submitting a script, you must send an email to info@iciclecreekact.com. That email should contain the following:
* Synopsis of play
* Brief statement of: (a) inspiration for the play (why you wrote it), (b) what themes you develop in the play, (c) where you think the play currently is in its development, and (d) what you believe you can accomplish at the festival
* Character breakdown (genders & ages, etc.)
* Status of the play, including prior readings
* Your brief history as a playwright (if you are unknown to ICTF)
If ICTF's email reply to you requests that you send your play, the postmark deadline for submissions is February 15, 2008. Applicants will be notified by email by May 15th, 2008.
For full submission guidelines, please visit http://www.iciclecreekact.com/submit.shtml

DYLAN DAYS CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST
Hibbing, MN
Deadline: 2-28-2008

Dylan Days is an annual event and an association dedicated to advancing the arts in Bob Dylan's hometown of Hibbing, Minnesota. Dylan Days is sending out its annual call for poetry, short fiction and—new for 2008—one-act plays for the Dylan Days Creative Writing Contest. In the brand new one-act play competition, one winner will be named along with honorable mentions. The winning playwright will receive $100 and have their work performed on the Hibbing Community College stage during Dylan Days as the featured entertainment for our annual Literary Showcase. The play will be cast with experienced actors and directed by Michael Ricci, the award-winning director of the HCC theatre program.
All submissions should be plays that have not been produced in any other theatres. They can be of any genre except musicals, or puppet theatre. Scripts should be between 30 and 60 minutes in length, and contain 3-6 characters. Settings should be fairly modest, staying away from extravagent set pieces and special effects. Content and subject matter are completely open, but should reflect what Bob Dylan came to be known for—an original voice who embraced a new direction, a unique vision with the power to move people. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and the winning entry will be given a fully mounted production on the Hibbing Community College Theatre stage.
Entries need not be about Bob Dylan or use his style of writing; but they should strive for creativity, originality and literary theme.
You will be asked to provide your name, the title of piece, your phone number, address and your e-mail address along with the text of your work. Students will be asked to list the school or college they are enrolled in at the time of entry. Any special formatting must be done in HTML; otherwise entries should be submitted text only.
For more information on the one-act competition, contact Aaron Brown at aaronbrown@hibbing.edu or 218-262-7213, or Mike Ricci at 218-262-7377.

BEREA QUILT EXTRAVAGANZA IV
Ten Minute Quilt Play Festival
Deadline: 2-29-2008 (email)

During the fourth annual Berea Quilt Extravaganza, the Berea Arts Council will sponsor a ten-minute play festival featuring ten plays. Plays with a theme of quilts or quilting are preferred, but not necessary. This year’s theme is “Family Relationships,” so if your play has a theme about a family relationship but does not have a quilt or quilt theme, send it on. And use your imagination; creativity counts!

Submission Information:
* Anyone may submit a play for consideration. You do not have to be a professional playwright for your work to be considered.
* The plays should be no longer than 10 minutes running time.
* Each playwright may only submit one play for consideration, so send us your best work.
* Please limit the number of actors needed for your play to four (4).
* Although we will use a full cast and each play will be put on its “feet” (not reader’s theatre) the performances will be technically minimal, so works using little or no set/props/costumes are preferred.
* Submitted plays must be royalty-free (we’re on a budget) and unpublished. The plays can have been performed elsewhere as long as they have not been professionally produced in Kentucky.
* Each script should be typed and submitted as a Microsoft Word document or a .pdf.

Send two electronic files: 1) a separate cover/title page with the playwright’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address and 2) the script—with the name of the play followed by a comma and then the page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. The playwright’s name should not appear in the file with the script, only on the cover/title page.
If you use Final Draft or other script writing software, you can send a .pdf (without the cover page filled out), but just make sure you send a second file with your cover page only.
E-mail your play by February 29, 2008 as a Microsoft Word document to the Berea Arts Council at info@bereaartscouncil.org. Use the subject line “Submission.”
If you have any questions that have not been answered here, please call the Berea Arts Council at (859) 985-9317.
