Open Plan Productions is a young theatre company founded to stage new American writing in the UK. “US love bites” will be an evening of five or six UK premiers of ten minute American plays, written by emergent American writers with little or no performance tradition in the UK. They will be performed at The Old Red Lion and the newly reopened Tristan Bates Theatre, over a couple of nights in November 2008 (in negotiation). The production will be co-directed and co-produced by Prav Menon-Johansson and James Bounds.
Prav Menon-Johansson is an emerging London director who started her directing career by training at the ART, Boston in the summer of 2007. She participated in FeverFest 2007 and SlamBoston 2007 and also assisted Greg Maraio for Dancing at Lughnasa (Way Theatre Artists) and Paul Daigneault for The Mystery of Edwin Drood (SpeakEasy Stage Company) at The Boston Center for the Arts. Now she is back in London she has teamed up with James Bounds who is the founder of Open Plan Productions.
Please send all scripts to pravmj@mac.com
Note: I don't know the deadline for submissions, but its got to be fairly soon. If you're interested contact them by using the above email address. ~Edd

| Pity. I have a new ten minute play I'd like to try out (see Please May I Live?) but they're looking only for American playwrights eh?

I e-mailed them and they responded quickly to send something ASAP.
Something about love (whatever that means) and nothing depressing.
So I did. They sent back an immediate acceptance. Nice.

Martin.
I'm a Brit. They wont know the difference between Americans and Canadians! Go for it! Just give an American's address!
Good luck!

Martin - and all other interested Canadians - I e-mailed the following query earlier today:
"Came accross your ad for 10-minute plays on the playwrights forum site, however... I'm a Canadian. Do I - and all other - Canadians qualify to enter our plays?"
I'll post their response - if any.

| I was planning to do that myself. I'll wait to hear what you find out. Thanks, and cheers.

Martin,
Just received a reply and we Canadians qualify, too! Deadline for submissions is the end of next week. Good luck!

| Ok, I've sent mine off, and I'm assuming you've sent yours off too. I wish us both luck, if that isn't crowding their event with stageplayforum folk too much.

Rec'd. a confirmation today that they rec'd. the submission. However...no immediate acceptance as was the case with Timmy. Some of us have to wait for our answers, one way or the other. Then again - we are mere Canadians (nudge-nudge, wink-wink).

...ummm, I meant they immediately acknowledged by e-mail submission.
(I say that with humble red face)

| Well, that makes three of us waiting to hear then. I had an acknowledgment too.

| Mine apparently arrived after the previously not-quite-specified deadline, so it will not be considered at this time. They did write to tell me that (and to apologize for not specifying the deadline) and asked to keep it for consideration for an event in 2009. I don't know if that will actually happen, but it was good to hear from them this way.

I queried with synopses about three of my shorts. Very courteous, professional and thoughtful reply. Mine were not about love. None were exactly right for this round, but would consider for future.
best,

I haven't heard. They haven't disqualified mine, which was about love in the broader sense but not in any sense about romantic love, at least they haven't so far as I know. But they haven't informed me whether it's been selected, rejected or is still in process. Waiting too.
(Checked their website to see if there was any news there. Thought perhaps they'd made their selection and not informed any of us, because a review of 'Love in America' was up, but it was for a show they put on in 2007. Presumably a predecessor to this one.

Thinking further, perhaps they (those in the position to make decisions) should consider creating a show focusing on and/or entitled: "Amour Among Les Canadians." They could include images of snow, sleds, sled-dogs, trappers dressed in fur tuques/hats, mukluks, arm wrestlers... You know - your typical Canadian images. I mean, then for sure we'd qualify, right?
Oh well... Patience is a virtue. Anybody else hear anything?
