*******************
VERY IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR SCRIPTS TO ANY THEATRE GO TO THEIR WEBSITE (IF IT IS NOT LISTED HERE, GOOGLE IT). LOOK TO SEE IF THEY HAVE A MISSION STATEMENT. SEE WHAT PLAYS THEY'VE DONE IN PREVIOUS SEASONS. MAKE CERTAIN THEY ACCEPT SCRIPTS DIRECTLY FROM AUTHOR'S. THOUGH MOST LISTED HERE DO, SOME MAY HAVE CHANGED THEIR MINDS AND ARE NOW ONLY ACCEPTING SCRIPTS THROUGH AGENTS ONLY.

ALSO:
WHETHER SENDING BY SNAIL MAIL OR EMAIL, HAVE A WELL-THOUGHT COVER LETTER. LET THEM KNOW YOU'VE DONE YOUR RESEARCH AND GIVE THEM A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF WHAT THEY ARE ABOUT TO READ. AND NEVER SEND MORE THAN A ONE-PAGE COVER LETTER.

Actor's Art Theatre, LA, ongoing

Posted: 1/3/07

We are open to all styles of writing with a special interest in character driven comedies or dramas that ultimately lift the spirit. We are the smallest size professional theatre in Los Angeles (32 seats/stage is 16 feet across) - so the set requirements should be simple or flexible.

Submit one-act plays, full-length plays, translations, adaptations, ten-minute plays, solo pieces, cabaret revue
Query w/synopsis and sample dialogue, E-mail submission, E-mail query

One of the smallest Equity Waiver theaters in LA, Actor’s Art Theatre, located in a converted apartment in the Mid Wilshire District is home to some of LA’s most talented stage and screen actors.

Dedicated to the belief that we are not separate from each other and have the capacity to empathize with all people; through the actor’s art, we can produce works that entertain and inspire change.

Artistic Director, Jolene Adams has developed over 50 productions. She starred in and produced Adam & Eva Marie, winner of 6 Drama-Logue Awards; directed and developed Dan Fante’s Ovation Award
nominated hit Boiler Room, (LA Times Best of The Year List); developed award winning comic Cathy Ladman’s Scaredypants for HBO/US Comedy Arts Festival and Emmy Award winning Mike Dugan’s Men Fake Foreplay.
Each year we present readings, labs and produce an original play, classic revival or West Coast Premiere. Some projects move to larger theaters and TV or screen development.

Central to our work is the Writing Out Loud Series where actors develop stories and once a week audiences can watch solo shows go from on-book brief monologues to ready for Off-Broadway plays.

Theater at AAT has been an intimate family experience for 12 years.
A passionate cook who lives in the same building, artistic director, Adams, has been known to invite entire audiences over for supper after a show!

ACTORS WITHOUT SPACES

Playwrights of color in the Bronx and beyond

A new Bronx-based multicultural theatre ensemble, and new play development lab, Actors Without Spaces, is seeking original submissions primarily from playwrights of color from all of the five boroughs. All contemporary, experimental, and provocative styles and subjects, one-acts and full-length stage plays only, small casts preferred. No musicals, no children's plays. AWS seeks to counteract the pervasive discrimination and isolation that minority playwrights continue to face in the theatre by providing developmental/dramaturgical support such as a bi-monthly play reading series, workshop productions of original works, theatre festivals, and panel discussions with professional theatre artists. Send bio, synopsis, ten-page sample of most current work to:

Actors Without Spaces

9 Metropolitan Oval, #7A
Bronx, NY 10462

Submissions will also be considered for Uptown Local/Singular Scenes Staged Readings events at Kingsbridge Library sponsored by the Bronx Writers Center, a program sponsored by the Bronx Council on the Arts.

AUTUMN STAGES WANTS SEASONED PLAYWRIGHT
We are looking for a seasoned playwright to help us write a show about our experiences as middle-aged women who decide to go back to New York and “live our dream” of becoming a professional actress at the age of “somewhere in our fifties.” We work in an improvisational style...that is...actors would do improvs of scenes and writer could then translate the work into a script and incorporate it with his or her own ideas.

We produced last season the U.S. premiere of a play by Marie Jones (author of Stones In His Pockets) at Irish Arts Center. In addition, we have produced the U.S. premiere of several Irish and English plays (The Whisperers, Spring Meeting, Shadowed Voices: Irish Women Playwrights Heard). I have a M.A. in Arts Marketing and have worked as the Marketing Director at George St. Playhouse, the Arden Theatre Co. and have worked for several years as an off Broadway producer in NYC.

Please, only serious inquiries. We are looking for a playwright with a track record who likes to work improvisationally with actors to create scripts. Position starts immediately; pPay is negotiated fee, percentage of door when play is produced.

AXIAL THEATRE’S NEW WORKS IN NEW YORK READING SERIES
Axial Theatre is looking for playwriting submissions for its developmental reading series, New Works In New York. Every other Sunday Axial Theatre provides a workshop environment for playwrights and their work. The plays are cast and read by actors who attend the series and then each playwright receives feedback on their plays to help them with the development process. The series was created to serve the playwright and the comments from the group are never about the audiences version of the play but rather what will best help the writer. Axial Theatre is a company that believes in the workshop process of creating plays and collaborative spirit. In the past three years we have produced readings and full productions of many of the plays developed through this series. Playwrights interested in Axial Theatre and New Works in New York can send submissions to stephayn@aol.comhttp://www.axialtheatre.org

BLACK SWAN THEATER
Black Swan Theater (founded, 1988) is putting out a call for new scripts. The process is this: every two months (this may go to once a month, depending on response and energy) Black Swan will arrange a reading of a new script or scripts before an audience, to which the playwright will be invited. Response sheets will be given to director, performers, and audience to aid in the development of the play, and an audio recording will be made for the playwright if he cannot be in attendance. Especially promising scripts will undergo further development at Black Swan and at Highland Repertory Theater (our professional partner in this endeavor) toward the end of possible full production.

No payment to the playwright during reading and development, but contracts negotiated for full productions.

Please mail (no e-mail submissions at this time) submissions (full length, one act, one person shows, musicals) to:

CITY THEATRE (PA)
Material: Query letter (see below)
City Theatre’s mission is to provide an artistic home for the development and production of contemporary plays of substance and ideas that engage and challenge diverse audiences.
City Theatre Company is Pittsburgh’s home for contemporary theatre, with a strong focus on new works, often in their premieres or second productions (and often with the playwright in residence developing the text). City Theatre also commissions new plays, though commissioned playwrights are not chosen through a submission or application process. City Theatre will approach writers from whom we’d like to commission work. We are particularly interested in new, innovative, theatrical plays of substance and ideas that engage the intellect as well as the emotions, and that challenge pre-conceptions about both life and theatre; works of unconventional form, content, and/or use of language; compelling stories; and plays by under-represented voices (e.g., women, writers of color, writers with disabilities). We are always seeking unproduced work, and we accept full-length original plays, adaptations, translations, musicals, and solo plays. We are not presently considering one-acts or children’s plays. In a typical season, we produce seven plays in our two performance spaces, along with MOMENTUM: new plays at different stages (our new works festival), the Young Playwrights Festival (7th to 12th grade playwrights from our region), and one or two special events. Our 272-seat Mainstage Theatre is capable of flexible stage and seating configurations (though we most often use thrust or proscenium staging). Our 120-seat Hamburg Studio Theatre is currently in a thrust configuration.
City Theatre Company does not accept unsolicited scripts, nor does it accept submissions by e-mail. For consideration, playwrights should mail a query letter, along with a resume, a complete synopsis of the play, a character breakdown, a 15- to 20-page dialogue sample (and demo cassette or CD for musicals), and the development and production history of the play to:
Carlyn Ann Aquiline
Literary Manager & Dramaturg
City Theatre Company
1300 Bingham Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15203
A self-addressed, stamped envelope must be provided to ensure the return of submission materials. Response time for queries is at least several months. No phone calls.

CURIOUS THEATRE COMPANY
Curious is committed to producing full-length plays that provoke, cajole, question and disturb our perspectives on important contemporary social, cultural and political issues. We encourage experimentation in form, structure and character, but also celebrate accessibility and engagement. We are not looking for plays that offer easy answers, or represent only a single point of view within a complex issue. We rarely produce kitchen-sink dramas or completely naturalistic plays.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
In addition to agent submissions, Curious Theatre Company will accept unsolicited manuscripts to the following specifications:

Please send a query letter including a one-page synopsis, a ten page dialogue sample of the script, the development history of the play, and a resume listing other works. We prefer submissions through standard mail and will only accept electronic submissions with prior permission.

If your play seems like Curious material, we will request the full manuscript. If your full script is requested, please mark “SOLICITED” on the outer envelope, and either send us a SASE or SASPC with proper postage, or indicate if we may recycle the script. All scripts will be reviewed by Curious Theatre Company’s Literary Committee.

Due to the high volume of submissions, please allow four to six months for a response. You may submit an e-mail query to bonnie@curioustheatre.org. Please attach required submission materials in Microsoft Word Format (.doc).

DENVER CENTER THEATRE COMPANY’S
2006 COLORADO NEW PLAY SUMMIT (FEB 9-11, 2006)
Deadline: submissions accepted year-round

Background
Denver Center Theatre Company is returning to a commitment to new works with a new-plays program that will begin in February 2006 under the title Colorado New Play Summit, artistic director Kent Thompson and director of new play development Bruce K. Sevy announced Aug. 30.

The festival (Feb. 9-11, 2006) will be open to theatre professionals, critics and playwrights—as well as Denver audiences, of course—"to explore the next great American plays." Agented and unagented works are being accepted.

In 2006, the festival of readings of new scripts will happen during the run of a fully-produced world premiere production on one of DCTC's stages. Final plans are still being developed for the 2006 Summit, but it will coincide with the world premiere of Wayne Lemon's dark comedy Jesus Hates Me, playing in the Denver Center's Ricketson Theatre Jan. 12-March 11, 2006.

Future Colorado New Play Summits will introduce multiple world premieres (perhaps commissioned) and expanded readings, according to DCTC. The program is walking in 2006 before sprinting in future seasons.

For more information about the resident professional Equity company, visit http://www.denvercenter.org.

GUIDELINES for COLORADO NEW PLAY SUMMIT
Denver Center Theatre Company accepts original, full-length, unproduced plays. Please submit no more than one play per year. All plays should be submitted through an agent, with the exception of plays by residents of the following Rocky Mountain States: Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. Adaptations will be considered only if the playwright has secured underlying rights, or if the adapted material is public domain. No musicals or children’s theatre plays. We cannot accept email submissions. Please include an SASE if you wish return of your materials. Plays may be sent directly, without prior synopsis or dialogue sample. Response time may be up to six months, due to high volume of submissions. Plays are accepted year-round.

DETROIT REPERTORY THEATRE SEEKS ISSUE-ORIENTED PLAYS
The Detroit Repertory Theatre welcomes new plays for production at our 194 seat, proscenium stage theatre. Our New Playwrights' Program is not a competition, festival, workshop or staged reading program. We consider plays writers feel are ready for production, not development.

We are interested in issue-oriented plays (a comedic approach is fine); 5 to 7 characters; no double casting, and we avoid plays that require children. No One Acts, please. We are not accepting musicals at this time.

Each season we produce, at least, one original work. All plays submitted should be:
– Bound in a folder
– Cast list provided
– Typewritten in proper manuscript form with pages numbered
– Include a SASE for return of the manuscript

Selection Process
The Literary Manager and an in-house team of directors reads and recommends scripts throughout the year to be considered for production. The Artistic Director reads the recommended scripts. The worthiness, importance, taste, artistry, capability, costs, talent available, and position in the season’s lineup of each recommended script is discussed and defended by members of the team and the Artistic Director at a special session. Then, the Artistic Director makes the final determination.

Playwrights wishing to submit scripts for consideration should address scripts to:
Detroit Repertory Theatre
c/o The Literary Manager
13103 Woodrow Wilson St
Detroit MI 48238-3686.

A self-addressed return envelope and postage should be included.

DIJO PRODUCTIONS’ CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Deadline: open
DIJO seeks submissions of plays for full productions. While DIJO typically features Latina and Latino playwrights, that is not its exclusive mission. Of particular interest are plays that are "cutting edge" and take risks with subject matter or form. The submissions that they are seeking for full productions could have been produced previously, but not necessarily.

Cast size: No preferred minimum or maximum. Works need not be written by women exclusively, although they do have an interest in promoting women playwrights.
Pay is involved both for readings and full productions, and they do expect to be operating, for the most part, under Equity arrangements.

Scripts may be submitted by US and non-US playwrights, keeping in mind that the audiences will come from California.

DIJO now seeks submissions, for 2006, of plays by Latina playwrights (or plays on Latino themes written by non-Latinos) that have not been produced previously, for possible inclusion in the Ford Program. The Ford program each summer includes a staged reading series of 11 new plays by Latino/Latina playwrights, or on Latino themes, that have not been produced elsewhere. In the current season, all of the writers are Latino/Latina—including DIJO's two productions by Alfonso Ramirez and Carlos Lacamara. DIJO submitted about 6 scripts and two were chosen, as part of the 12-play series.

Diana and Jerry also are assisting, on an informal basis, Santa Barbara City College, which is a wonderful, non-Equity house, which typically offers an Equity Guest Artist Contract to their lead. If Diana and Jerry see a script that they think might be of interest to City College, they would pass that on with the playwright's permission.
Submissions can be sent to Jerry or Diana by email in PDF or Word formats, or by US mail.

Postal Addresses:

EAST WEST PLAYERS
Play Submission Guidelines: EWP now accepting unsolicited manuscripts
Please be aware that we are an Asian American theatre, and most of the new works we produce revolve around Asian Pacific American (as opposed to Asian) characters and/or themes. We are looking for both comedy and drama, in English and financially viable (which includes considerations such as cast size, number of sets, etc.), and they don’t necessarily have to be "issue-oriented," in that race can be an unspoken component in the work.

Writers are strongly encouraged to browse through our production history, which can be found here . Ask yourselves what kind of plays we’ve produced in the past, and who our audience is.

Manuscripts should be bound, preferably with brads and three-hole punch paper, with a title page containing all contact information for the author. Please also include cover letter and resume.

If you’d like to send a SASP (self-addressed stamped postcard) for confirmation of receipt, we’ll send it back to you when we receive your materials.

If you’d like us to return your script, please send a manuscript-sized SASE with the appropriate postage. We typically keep all plays for our archives; please let us know if you would NOT like us to do so.

If you have Internet access and prefer to be notified via email, we can do that as well.

Please allow 3 – 9 months for consideration. All scripts are read by our Literary Committee and a single script is read by a minimum of 2 readers, sometimes more, before we make a recommendation.

Address your scripts to:
Jeff Liu, Literary Manager
East West Players
120 Judge John Aiso St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012.

FFI: http://www.eastwestplayers.org
PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL SCRIPTS. Good luck!

(If you live in Los Angeles and would like to volunteer for the EWP Literary Committee, please email jliu@eastwestplayers.org.

ELECTRIC PEAR PRODUCTIONS, based in New York City, seeks original plays previously unperformed in New York. Small casts and set requirements are preferred, and submissions will be reviewed for fully mounted productions, readings and workshops. The following is an excerpt of our mission statement:

Electric Pear Productions presents innovative performance that resides at the junction of adventurous art and traditional storytelling. The new
production company explores the intersection point between both diverse art forms and contrasting cultures. Electric Pear creates performance that embraces and draws together work from several genres - theatre, dance, music, film and visual art, and those that take a decidedly international and wide-ranging approach to the moral complexity of the human condition. Electric Pear will provide resources and support for theatre artists to create, shape and launch new work. Electric Pear Productions will present original plays and multi-disciplinary performance pieces, which will provide a setting for genres to meet, mix, and create unique new definitions for what compelling art can be. Through cross-border and cross-genre collaboration, Electric Pear aims to broaden the scope of the American theatre artist and deepen the landscape in which they work.

Electric Pear Productions was founded in March 2006 by playwright Ashlin Halfnight and producer Melanie Sylvan after collaborating on the hugely successful New York production and Hungarian tour of Halfnight’s play, God’s Waiting Room. The company was created with the goal of providing a nurturing environment for artists to launch original theatrical pieces which explore the artistic landscape in America and the world over. Our goal is to be a home for preeminent artists and their work, and to be an innovative presenter of collaborative creative endeavors through highly efficient and professional operations. Electric Pear’s proposed first season will include two New York City productions, a performance-art festival, an international tour, and, additionally, the initiation of three artistic development programs.

Plays can be submitted electronically to Literary Director Emily Long at
emily@electricpear.org. Alternatively plays can be sent by post to
Electric Pear Productions, P.O. Box 281, New York NY 10028. Please
include a brief biography. Copies of plays will not be returned unless a
pre-paid envelope is enclosed. Additional questions should be submitted
to Emily Long, Literary Director.

ELDRIDGE PUBLISHING
Eldridge Publishing is always looking for new plays and musicals. Here are a few helpful tips if you're thinking about submitting.

Please submit plays and musicals suitable for performance by community theatres and junior and senior high schools. We like all kinds of plays and are always open to new ideas. Generally speaking, our customers like plays with more female than male roles or flexible casting in which roles can be played by either men or women. This is not a hard-and-fast rule, however.

We strongly recommend having your script workshopped, read, or performed. Scripts rewritten after this process are of a much higher caliber.

When you submit your manuscript please include a cover letter giving us a brief description of the story of the play, its performance history, and if it has earned any awards. In addition, we would like to know a little about your writing experience.
Also, please tell us if this is a simultaneous submission and/or if you have included a stamped postcard for us to return immediately to acknowledge receipt of your script.
We receive hundreds of manuscripts a year and want to give each careful attention and review. That's why it takes us about 2 months to respond. Be sure to include a SASE, a self-addressed, stamped envelope, so if we can't use your play you can continue to market it.

Brief questions may be addressed to us at our e-mail address, info@histage.com. We look forward to reading your work!

Address manuscripts to:

FOOTHILL THEATRE COMPANY’S, THE

NEW VOICES OF THE WILD WEST
We are primarily interested in new (unproduced) plays about the rural American West for inclusion in our staged reading and development series, New Voices of the Wild West. Full-length, one-act, comedy, drama, history, romance, fairytale, adaptation – theatricality above all. Show us something we haven’t seen before. No melodramas, no gold rush or western clichés, no history plays that sound like you wrote them with an encyclopedia open in your lap, please.

Advice: Show an awareness of what it takes to produce a play at a small regional theatre. A good play with a small cast has a much better chance than a good play with a large cast. Technically simple beats technically complex every time. Apart from New Voices entries, getting a new play produced here is a long shot, but we’re always looking for good plays that might fit certain needs in our season. A good commercial comedy, for example, is always in demand. Big musicals, on the other hand, are not a good fit for our company.

Send: query; or query/synopsis; or query/synopsis/dialogue sample (first 10 pages of script); or complete manuscript. Include SASE if you want materials returned.

Response Time: E-mailed queries receive an almost immediate response. Response time varies widely for anything else. Queries and manuscripts sent through U.S. Post will usually sit on a shelf until we have time to read them – most of the playreading gets done in mid- through late summer. Do not e-mail entire manuscripts – we won’t read them. Do not query by phone.

Chances: We receive approximately 200 submissions a year, from which we choose 4 plays for New Voices. Our regular season usually consists of 5-8 productions a year, 0-2 of which could be new scripts.

Contact: Gary Wright, Literary Manager. c/o The Foothill Theatre Company, PO Box 1812, Nevada City, CA 95959. E-mail queries to gary@foothilltheatre.org

GARAGE ENSEMBLE, THE (NY)
Material: Full Length Plays (60-90min’s) or 10-min. Plays

The Garage Ensemble seeks play submissions for its 2008 season. The Garage Ensemble is a group of young theatre artists in New York City, the core of which met as members of the lab company at the Hangar Theatre in Ithaca, NY.

The Garage serves in part as homage to our roots at the Hangar, but more importantly as a symbol for the work that we aspire to create: work that demonstrates all the grit, determination, and creativity of a crew constructing a well-crafted story, while also reflecting the vitality and openness associated with such a humble space. With that goal in mind, the Garage is committed to the work of playwrights, young and old, established and emerging, who display the courage to tell their story by breaking through traditional conceptions. We strive to combine honesty to the plays and their characters with our aesthetic as young artists to tell the stories of those playwrights in unique ways. And finally, we dare to confront material that scares us, as individuals and as a society, with the confidence that it is in that very challenge we can empathize with the fears and challenges of the characters whose stories we tell.  Submissions should be unpublished, either full-length (60-90 minutes) or 10-minute scripts.
Please send submissions to thegarageensemble@gmail.com
