I know we're all very busy, but I'm looking for a playwriting mentor. Anyone with experience interested?

Hey, I'm a registered member and boy would I ever love to find a mentor. I'm not sure I really know what a mentor is and I don't think I've ever had one, but boy would I ever love to find one. Someone who not only believes in my work, but is willing to HELP.
Heck, I'd take an real time friend with a valid interest in the craft of writing for the stage. I don't know a soul who is truly interested. When I try to discuss a plot problem or some other playwriting issue, they try to appear interested, but their eyes are glazing over.
Folks seem to think the writing just happens. My actor friends like the work, but only after it's finished. They have no concept of the craft. My writer friends are chasing the next best seller and though they enjoy my shows, they have no concept of what it takes to get something onstage.
I suppose living in New York or maybe Chicago would help, but what does a writer with deep roots in the soil of nowhereville do?
Hey, I just figured it out. We come to a site like this and REGISTER then we take what we can and give what we can then we get back to writing.

scenedreamer,
The beauty of this forum is that many of the members are very well-equipped to mentor (in media res, Paddy, Edd, MaryS, MSdirector and many more). By leaving samples of your work or entire short pieces and asking for feedback or help with troubling passages, you will reap some of the benefits of having a mentor.
This forum, when used to its advantage, is the very best forum of its kind on the internet. Trust me, I know. I've been a member for many, many years ('though not known as "hudson").
My best,
hudson

hudson and scenedreamer,
I agree with you entirely and I have mentioned the same, as have many, before on this Forum. This site has always been clearly about the posted work and not the personalities. This site seems absent of "tude" problems.
Hudson, thank you for mentioning me and others, but I have never encountered anyone who has left less than adequate critique - no matter the brevity or length - and who has not shown the sincerest respect for anyone who has posted something on this site. If there has been a rare instance, we can assure anyone who posts, that people like that will not last long on this site thanks to paddy and paul's diligence and the concern of others who will turn them in!
Not that this site has not had its contentious gusto and rows!! But they have all been civilized while also being quite passionate...AND INTERESTING!!!!
I wish I could find that open passion and especially open honesty in some theatre companies!!! That is why I never have joined one. I have always felt the moment you join a company, the lying and "groupthink" begins. That is just me and my own experience. For some, companies are fine and can be highly creative. I have been an ad hoc member of some groups, but will never join. "Familiarity breeds content" is my saying I have coined. For the most part, I have found this to be true.
It seems critiques are posted here as time allows for the individual posters and whether they have anything constructive to say. Often I do not say anything, and others will concur for themselves, because there is nothing I/they can offer at the time due to time or interest. It does not mean that a particular piece is good or bad, but if we have nothing to say there is no point in pretending. Sometimes we post just a "Way to go" or "Atta Boy/Gal" to show we support each other.
This site has been a benison for me, and I know for others, though we go into dormancy on occasion. I am in one now. Even though I check in, I have not really been posting critiques. August is a rough month always for me. Highly uncreative and humid and...just yeecchhh!
So, to all, keep posting. And make a point to search the past postings, not just the current ones that are on the top of the file/pile! You never know what you may find!
best,

What nice responses. I have posted a couple of scripts here and got some very helpful feedback. However, I posted only when I was working on a PLAY. Most often, especially lately, I am writing full length musicals which are probably more difficult to critique online since the music is such a big part.
I would love some feedback on a musical tragedy I am writing now though. It's a slave story and for an American Indian writer, the language is very difficult. The story line seems to be okay, but I may need help with lyrics. However, it is a full length and folks here are writers so who has the time? Besides, it goes onstage in two weeks so this may be a little late in the game.
Mostly I'm a lurker, but this site has been so helpful to me.
Thanks to the powers that be.
