Day 23, and I emailed "The Stronger Bond" and "The Emerald Connection" to The Women's Theatre Project. Mary Alice has posted details under Playwright's Opportunities, but here they are anyway:

The Women's Theatre Project is putting together a reading of women's short plays (10 minutes), scenes and monologues to celebrate International Women's Day. The reading will be on Sunday, March 9th in Ft. Lauderdale. FL. As this is a fundraiser for The Women's Theatre Project and the International Center for Women Playwrights, no royalty fees will be paid. TWTP is seeking 10 minute plays, short scenes and monologues with all female casts written by female playwrights. Deadline for submission, via email only, is February 25th, 2008 at midnight. Send submissions to twtp@bellsouth.net. Any questions, contact Marj O'Neill-Butler at dramamarj@yahoo.com.

DAY 23 (2/6/08) Today I am sending via snail mail two copies of EVENSONG to the folks below.  I had to really tighten the pages to get it down to 15 pages and it may be a minute or two over 20 minutes, but I think it's worth the gamble.  Also, note that it says "for our Fall 2007...Festival" on their webpage.  It is an annual event so I am assuming that it is also applicable to this year as well.  In any case, before I mail it, I will call the telephone number listed below to confirm it.  I am so glad there is only one week left.  I hate submitting!  But that is exactly why we have the Spree, isn't it?  ~Edd

Days 25, 26 and 27  Email, then I am away for the weekend! The Man Who Lost America to: Desperate Act, a new theatrical production company, is accepting submissions of original scripts for upcoming NYC productions. Most interesting are bold, provocative plays that embrace imagination and theatricality in the service of telling powerful stories, stories that draw a line from the experiences of individuals to the larger patterns common to human experience, that shine a broad light on the small events in a life or that examine big stories in very personal ways, stories told with humor, pathos or any combination of both. If you are a writer interested in forming a strong artistic partnership to create meaningful theatre for our times please send an electronic copy of script alongwith a brief cover letter outlining your background and artistic goals to Daniel Elias Cohen at adesperateact@gmail.com. Scripts of any length are acceptable for submission.  A Desperate Act is committed to forming long-term collaborative relationships with an evolving ensemble of actors, designers, writers and directors. Contact Daniel Elias Cohen adesperateact@gmail.com

Kris, thanks for bringing this opp to my attention.  I'm emailing them Desert Devils today and I think I'll email them Tales From Darkest Suburbia tomorrow.  I've a little tweaking to do on Tales before sending it out.  I'm really reluctant to send to these people 'cause rejection really hurts when it comes from within your own State!

Well, this is a bummer. I received a Daemon Failure Notice on the email I sent to Phare Play, tried to send again, received another demon notice, tried to circumvent by sending to the address for the winter shorts and got a reply saying they were no longer accepting winter shorts. So scratch the above for Phare Play -- and I'll try to delete the posting. Up the creek!

But not for long, thanks to Circus Theatricals and Edd's post of Day 23. Snail-mailed "Color Schemes" (three copies) to Circus Theatricals for Day 27. You were right, Edd. They are having the festival again this year and now have the info on their website:

Decided to send another entry into the local competition below.  I just noted that the selected playwrights will be responsible for their own readings.  I'm not sure what that means.  I'm a hermit and agoraphobic.  Maybe if they chose one of my plays, though very unlikely, Kris will take care of the reading.  I've got to start reading these opps more carefully before I push "send."  This forum really deserves a moderator who's more literate! ~Edd

Day 28, and I sent "The Stronger Bond" to Brief Acts at Love Creek Productions.

Brief Acts (Love Creek Productions)

Looking for small-cast one-acts 10-30 minutes in length with an emphasis on women.
Prefer you not send a SASE. We get to things pretty quickly, but are a small organization. If your play is of interest, we'll contact you within 4 months.
If you include a letter for us to produce it for 5 performances through August 2008, it will make things go faster.
Send scripts to:

Love Creek
21-44 45th Avenue #4
LIC, NY 11101

We are a small company and do bare bones productions of the one acts, so we don't want anyone disappointed. If you are looking for bigger and better, we certainly understand.

****

I love the humility at the end of their call for submissions!

Edd, I didn't notice the "responsible for reading" part until my second look at the CTG New Venture Series, either. This probably ensures that one of your plays will be selected! I wouldn't be able to "take care" of the reading for you, but I'd be happy to be a reader and kill whatever future chances your play might have.

And we couldn't have a better moderator.

Day 28! I e-mailed Does Hal Have Rockers? to Dylan Days:
NEW FOR '08: Original one-act play competition  (open to all playwrights)

All submissions should be plays that have not been produced in any other theatres. They can be of any genre except musicals, or puppet theatre.
Scripts should be between 30 and 60 minutes in length, and contain 3-6 characters. Settings should be fairly modest, staying away from extravagant set pieces and special effects. Content and subject matter are completely open, but should reflect what Bob Dylan came to be known for - an original voice who embraced a new direction, a unique vision with the power to move people. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and the winning entry will be given a fully mounted production on the Hibbing Community College Theatre stage.

Entrants in the playwright contest only should submit via mail: aaronbrown@hibbing.edu

Fusion Theatre Company acknowledged receiving my script; that seems to happen so rarely I thought I'd pass that on. I submitted my 10 minute play, "There's No Wrigley Field" for their Something Left Unsaid themed play contest. For more information see Edd's comment on Day 17 (Jan 31)

Today is it--the day we've all worked toward.  Now we wait.  Under Markets and Marketing there is a topic called "Success Stories."  As your good news comes in (and it will--especially sircmichaels who has spent $1,687.46 in postage) share it with us on that section of the forum.

A great big thank you to all of you who have participated.  We've worked hard and we've worked together.  I feel a certain amount of joy from that.

Break a leg, my friends.  You've done well.  Thank you.

DAY 30: (Feb.13)
Berea Quilt Extravaganza IV
Ten Minute Quilt Play Festival
Call for Submissions (DEADLINE: Feb. 29, 2008)
During the fourth annual Berea Quilt Extravaganza, the Berea Arts Council will sponsor a ten minute play festival featuring ten plays on the subject of family relationships (with or without quilts or a quilting theme).
Timeline:
Submissions due by Feb 29, 2008
Winners notified by Apr 14, 2008
Performance is Aug 1, 2008
Submission Information:
Anyone may submit a play for consideration. You do not have to be a professional playwright for your work to be considered.
The plays should be no longer than 10 minutes running time.
Each playwright may only submit one (1) play for consideration, so send us your best work.
Each script should be typed and submitted as a Microsoft Word document or a .pdf.
Send two electronic files: 1) a separate cover/title page with the playwright’s name, address, phone number and e-mail address and 2) the script--with the name of the play followed by a comma and then the page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. The playwright’s name should not appear in the file with the script, only on the cover/title page.
Plays with a theme of quilts or quilting are preferred, but not necessary. This year’s theme is “Family Relationships,” so if your play has a theme about a family relationship but does not have a quilt or quilt theme, send it on. And, use your imagination, creativity counts!
Please limit the number of actors needed for your play to four (4). Although we will use a full cast and each play will be put on its “feet” (not reader’s theatre) the performances will be technically minimal, so works using little or no set/props/costumes are preferred.
Submitted plays must be royalty free (we’re on a budget) and unpublished. The plays can have been performed elsewhere as long as they have not been professionally produced in Kentucky.
We are not able to provide critique or feedback on unselected plays.
Playwrights wishing their 10 minute plays to be considered for the Quilt Play Festival should
e-mail their play by February 29, 2008 as a Microsoft Word document to the Berea Arts Council using this address:
info@bereaartscouncil.org.
If you use Final Draft or other script writing software, you can send a .pdf (without the cover page filled out), but just make sure you send a second file with your cover page only.
If you have any questions that have not been answered here, please call the Berea Arts Council at (859) 985-9317.

Day 30! Yippeeeee! Congratulations to all of us! We made it! (Four exclamation marks in a row... I guess I'm officially off my rocker now.)

Thank you, Edd, for being the driving force behind this amazing -- now that it's over -- experience. Not only did it force me to send plays to 30 different venues, but in my desperation I was forced to resurrect and rewrite a play I shelved two years ago, finish a play I shelved two months ago, and write two brand-new short plays. So this was a productive time in many ways. Now we all get to sit back and see what sprouts!

On this last day, I sent "Color Schemes" to TMPF -- Ten Minute Play Festival --  in Ashland, Ore. Details:
The Rogue Valley 10-Minute Plays Festival has a submission deadline of May 1. The 2008 event will be held in the latter half of August.
Working with graduating seniors from the directing and acting programs at Southern Oregon University, all submissions are read. Six to nine plays are selected and then cast. Rehearsals are held during the week before the event opens. Each play is given at least three rehearsals.
The event is held at the SOU campus, usually in a cabaret or other casual setting. The event opens on a Friday night and closes with a Sunday matinée.
Submissions
We accept sample scenes from playwrights between February 1 and May 1. If we choose to provide a prompt, a setting, or a thematic concept as a requirement, then this information will be posted here. For example, some year we might choose to provide a blackboard, teacher’s desk, and two student desks as the set. Or, we might choose a theme of “exchange”. (NOTE: For 2008, there are no prompts, settings, or themes.)
The scene and your contact information are sent via e-mail with a subject line of “TMPF Submission” to:
info@AshlandNewPlays.org
Please keep the scene to 12 pages or fewer. The scene, however, must be a complete one-act play.
Acceptable file formats are limited to:
PDF (Adobe Acrobat)
Plain text
Microsoft Word
Submissions are via the Internet, and thus there are no script returns necessary.
Beginning in mid-June, the selected playwrights are notified via e-mail or the other contact information provided.

Playwrights may be of any nationality and currently reside anywhere in the world. The plays, however, must speak to North American audiences. Winners are encouraged to attend. You may meet with your director and cast and attend a rehearsal if you choose.
Winning playwrights are responsible for their own transportation to and from the area as well as their own lodging and meals.
This event has no fees for submission or participation.

Again, congratulations, everyone!

I sent "There's No Wrigley Field" to the Ashland New Play Festival today. See kris' post above for more information.

I didn't manage to get 30 submissions made this month, more like 7/8. But my congratulations to those of you who did. Great job!

Congratulations to all who submitted. I think this could have been one of the better sprees I have witnessed. It was fun to follow.

No need for sympathy here, believe me, but I, due to our family members' health and loss the last several months, went on down mode, so really did not participate. Funny how shit in your life comes in waves. Just one example: my brother and I were admitted to a hospital the same effing day! And it was my birthday!!!!! We were trying to "Out Comfort" each other on the phone. "You take care of yourself." "No, you take care of yourself." Kind of brought comic tears to my eyes.

The moral of the story is: I did however make the use of the semi-creative down time to re-write some cover letters and synopses to accompany my future submits. I am pretty good at them, actually proud of the ones I write, but I actually learned even more conciseness from the recent discussion on this website about them. Always a chance to hone the skills. For example, the play I recently had published, my synopsis was about eight sentences. Publisher was very happy. Before the deadline, I contacted them and shrank it down to two sentences. Publisher was more happy. But remember, conciseness does not just mean "short." Again, thanks to all who participate on the site.

Everyone is doing better. Someone who knew what we had all been going - no, suffering - through noticed me the other day and said, "You're back now, aren't you? I can see it." Friends are soooo great. I said, "Yep! Back!"

best,

I sadly did not get to be involved this time as my internet went down right around the start (and still hasn't come back) - so the only submission I got out was a new short I wrote over a few weeks at a computer lab, since I can't get my previously finished stuff off my desktop.

Oh well, I suppose. It was fun reading through this thread. Next time I'm in.
