Who is David Wicks? What college? Any restrictions on the types of plays? Anything special he's looking for other than large casts for college students?

Day #11, I believe:
I submitted "Crappy at Yoga", my one-act bilingual drama, to a random posting on NY Craigslist. A couple of actresses were looking for a piece to perform as part of a showcase, or something.
I submitted "Cautionary Tale", my multidisciplinary piece integrating folklore, urban legends, and Spanish to address the immigration debate, to Electric Pear:
ELECTRIC PEAR PRODUCTIONS, based in New York City, seeks original plays previously unperformed in New York. Small casts and set requirements are preferred, and submissions will be reviewed for fully mounted productions, readings and workshops. The following is an excerpt of our mission statement:
Electric Pear Productions presents innovative performance that resides at the junction of adventurous art and traditional storytelling. The new
production company explores the intersection point between both diverse art forms and contrasting cultures. Electric Pear creates performance that embraces and draws together work from several genres - theatre, dance, music, film and visual art, and those that take a decidedly international and wide-ranging approach to the moral complexity of the human condition. Electric Pear will provide resources and support for theatre artists to create, shape and launch new work. Electric Pear Productions will present original plays and multi-disciplinary performance pieces, which will provide a setting for genres to meet, mix, and create unique new definitions for what compelling art can be. Through cross-border and cross-genre collaboration, Electric Pear aims to broaden the scope of the American theatre artist and deepen the landscape in which they work.
Electric Pear Productions was founded in March 2006 by playwright Ashlin Halfnight and producer Melanie Sylvan after collaborating on the hugely successful New York production and Hungarian tour of Halfnight’s play, God’s Waiting Room. The company was created with the goal of providing a nurturing environment for artists to launch original theatrical pieces which explore the artistic landscape in America and the world over. Our goal is to be a home for preeminent artists and their work, and to be an innovative presenter of collaborative creative endeavors through highly efficient and professional operations. Electric Pear’s proposed first season will include two New York City productions, a performance-art festival, an international tour, and, additionally, the initiation of three artistic development programs.
Plays can be submitted electronically to Literary Director Emily Long at
emily@electricpear.org. Alternatively plays can be sent by post to
Electric Pear Productions, P.O. Box 281, New York NY 10028. Please
include a brief biography. Copies of plays will not be returned unless a
pre-paid envelope is enclosed. Additional questions should be submitted
to Emily Long, Literary Director.

Hi Bill
CSU is Charles Sturt University here in Australia. David controls their Performing Arts prog. It's a graduate program( 3 Years) and he's on the look out for plays suitable for college age people with reasonably large casts. Around 10 to 13 is fine for him.
Was going to say no musicals but they just did a very good if a bit odd production of a Gilbert and Sullivan. he's adventurous and anxious to give his students wide exposure. Even brave enough, wise enough to use members of our community group for older parts rather than have students play way out of age.
Hope that helps
The best Nic

Greetings all - thank goodness for clumping. Good evening to most - good mroning to Nic and maybe Swann (Swaann - love your child already - I have a ...."name" for my mother and while it takes a long time to explain - I won't - I hear the sighs of relief- it is bonding).
Because of clumping I am - on Day 12 - up to date. I was high school sophomore biology teacher all week (scary for a theatre/English teacher), And while I cannot say I increased their knowledge of biology by much - I kept them amused. And kept me behind.
SUBMISSION #1: EXPENSIVE ACCOUNTING and THE CONFERENCE to: papadooloo@yahoo.com
From Playwrightbinge - he is looking for scenes for his college competitions. Preferably 1m, 1f. Aggressive comedy or drama with comedic overtones.
SUBMISSION #2: THE BURNING BUIDLING to Tobacco Bar Theatre Co. They are looking for new plays in development - full length, one act or ten-minute. Send full scipt. No payment to writer (hurts) but if I can develop .... Send to:
joe@tobaccobar.com
Joe LaRue, Artistic Director; c/o Horse Trade Theatre Group; 85 E. 4th St.; New York, NY 10003
SUBMISSION #3: Was asked for a development proposal for a previously submitted play (August 3rd - deadline passed) to submit what I would do if they choose my play for development. I am excited by this because I think it a good fit and they are excellent - but I do not speak "dramaturg" well and usually fall off the wagon when asked - what are your goals for development?
Uhhhh ... to make it the best play it can be? Are there buzz words or standard answers? I might inquire to playwrights on web and playwrightbinge because I noticed it was brought up when applying for things like O'Neill (I didn't) and find other playwrights are as stymied by that question as I am.
Love your weather reports! I include them with every submission because I live in MN and weather is paramount here - huge conversation over weather (cold, cold, rainy autumn ... the autumn that wasn't ... the five- -minute autumnm)
Twelve for 12 days! Yay for pathetic bio teacher!

Days #12 and #13:
I am deeply indebted to this spree, because it kicked my booty into finishing a play I've been dawdling over. I submitted "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle", my absurdist comedy about saintly visitations, kung fu, and cupcakes, to MadLab.
I also sent them "Not What Not to Wear".
I'll also be sending "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle" to a local director who was hosting a site-specific production in a hotel, but the venue fell through. I thought I might as well send it to her in case she scores a new spot.

Hello Hello Hello
It is gray/grey and icky in London.
But I just got a new submission op I wanted to pass on -
My friends in the DC Dollies and Rocket Bitch Revue passed it on.
A company called Drama Dept (http://www.dramadept.org) is looking for full length comedies. They can be e-mailed to blueiris315@hotmail.com with your contact info. Douglas Carter Beane is the artistic director.
Edd - tell me where else to put this on this site.
Best regards from your friendly neighbourhood Swann

My favorite neighborhood Shvon/Swann (Shvon: Streisand, Funny Girl),
I went to their website and hunted around and saw nothing about their looking for submissions. It could be there, but I overlooked it. I don't know where else this information can be posted unless I have a direct call for submissions, or at least a note of it on their website. I will send a play to them via email under the supposition that nothing ventured equals nothing gained. 'Though I should email them first to inquire.

That's true, and I posted that I had also written to Oprah in that thread. My Thesis Advisor at Emerson College, Andre Dubus III, had his novel "House of Sand and Fog" featured on the program, and as a result he sold thousands of additional copies and got a featured film out of it (with an academy award nomination for one of the actors!). So it's a proven way of getting your work out there.
Thanks for the idea!

| I loved the movies of House of Sand and Fog. I didn't read the novel, but my wife did. She enjoyed both the book and the movie. Let's hope Oprah loves the idea of producing plays as much as she enjoys discussing book! BillySundae

Day #14:
Happy Halloween, playwrights!
I submitted my surreal comedy "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle" to the local director who lost her venue, but it's worth a shot.
After a kind, albeit curious, note from V Fest, I went ahead and sent them a couple more pieces, "Not What Not to Wear" and "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle".

Morning all. Today I've sent via hard copy my latest full length play The Girl I Left Behind Me to the Patrick White award. Open only to Australian citizens over 20 years of age I'm afraid but if there are any of them on the board go either to the Sydney Theatre Co web site of google Patrick White award for an entry form.

I've been struggling all day to get it done, but I finally got a cover letter prepared. On my way home (15 minutes from now), I will mail a copy of Betwixt and Betwain to:
First Stage Children's Theatre, Milwaukee, WI.
Send a query to abooth@firststage.org
If the theatre want you to submit they will give you the mailing address and other information.
PS They apparently respond quickly to e-mail queries; I sent my query to them yesterday (Day 14 of the submission spree).

Billy, before I write to them, are they only looking for child-appropirate work? Do you think a play with a 12-year-old in it might work? I am just asking since you inquired and were responded to favorably. I don't have any pieces for 'kids,' per se.
Thanks!

I honestly don't know specifically what they are looking for. My play is based on the short stories of Mark Twain and is populated primarily by teen to mid twenties characters.
You might do one of two things: visit their web site and decide based on that whether your particular play might be appropriate; and/or send a query that describes your play more precisely. Some plays with few children in them (ie Alice in Wonderland) are neverthe less appropriate for children. Good luck.

Thanks. I did query them re: my 10-minute play PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICHES, a piece about the tenuous relationship between a 12-year-old girl and her mother. I suspect it won't be something they'e be interested in, but it doesn't hurt on inquire!
I have some of my pieces produced in the past year, though far more have been rejected, and I have to keep reminding myself (and John and Edd do this as well) that it's about the process more than the end result. Not that getting produced isn't very nice. :)

Just in time for Halloween - MN does its "I am a glacier-thing." I am having a hard time submitting! I am working on "stuff" for the December deadlines and what was appropriate - was sent. So, I am back to querying.
1. For Halloween: I did the "Oprah" thing. Why not? Maybe with enough e-mails they might think there's an audience for this! It's a good idea.
2. Sent queries to four theatres about BY CANDLELIGHT. I had previously sent to about ten theatres last summer - and received two - send half the script - but nothing much after that. It did well with a contest and is under consideration for development - so I don't want to send it all over until I know the results of the "development." Does that make sense?
So, I hope the queries take me to the weekend in case I sub the rest of the week. (Subbed for a religion teacher on Halloween - interesting day.)
Hope evryone's feeling a little virtuous these days!

really don't see the oprah thing working. doesn't seem to fit her format. maybe i'm just the pessimist.
never saw her book shows. do they actually read from the book? or just have the author and ask questions about research, how they write, who influenced, etc? and then have people who have read the book and then discuss it?

| Leon, you're probably right about Oprah. I've sent her a propsal before and it never saw the light of day. On the other hand Oprah has produced movies before, so I'm going to hope that she sees the value in producing short plays on her show. Last night she discussed the best pizza in America-- maybe they're running out of good ideas and will consider plays. Anyway, your common sense notwithstanding, I'm going to hold out a little longer. Who knows, if enough playwrights (us) and those who support us (family friends, colleagues) write her about the idea maybe a miracle will occur. Just a hope-- however far fetched. BillySundae

| My thought on this is we'd have a better chance with one-minute plays. Easier to find Chicago actors and get them up in a day and not locked into more that 1/4th of air time, not to mention giving opportunities to more playwrights.

Day # 16:
I submitted my surreal tribute to kung fu, "Hong Kong Phooey Hustle", to:
Kaliyuga Arts
Deadline: none declared
Since we produce only sporadically, it is of primary importance to us that the work we do be meaningful-- literarily, socially, and/or in the depth and complexity of the characters it presents -- beyond its simple commercial or entertainment value. Having recently relocated to Manhattan, we are currently in somewhat of a hiatus period while we regroup and explore production options for ourselves here.
Accepting one-act plays, full-length plays, musicals, translations, adaptations, solo pieces. Send synopsis and sample dialogue, E-mail submission OK. Negotiable Royalty. Extensive information (and a complete production history) can be found at

Ooh, I need to read CRAPPY AT YOGA. I just came back from a yoga class. :)
BTW, if any of you submitted to James Venhaus's holiday festival, it has been cancelled, and the school will put on another festival this spring (he sent this out to the binge group and any of you who actually submitted, but just in case you missed this, or saw my comment in his opp thread, I wanted to clarify).
I have run out of places to submit, alas. :(

DAY #19
Counting the days from Oct. 16th till today, tomorrow we hit 20 days and 2/3 through the spree. There is no such thing as running out of submission opps--they just may be more difficult to find. Anyway today I mailed via post the ten-minute version of Indifference to Largo Cultural Center. Indifference is about an older couple having their 40th anniversary as she is sinking into Alzheimer's.
LARGO CULTURAL CENTER AND AMERICAN STAGE THEATRE COMPANY ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 2007 - 10 X 10 PLAY FESTIVAL

The theme of the festival is "Anniversaries: The Marking of Time of a Notable Event." Ten 10-minute plays will be chosen and each winning author will receive $100. | No, see, Edd, I sent these out during the binge. :) (I was ahead of this binge.) When I said I've sent out plays to about 40 theatres in the past few months, I was not exaggerating! :) (I sent NOT A COMPETITION to the one you mentioned, though it doesn't *quite* fit their theme; I figured I'd try.)
