This was the week for world film premiers here in Kentucky. George Clooney and Rene Zellweger were in Maysville to premiere Leatherheads. The next day the stars left out of the Georgetown (KY) Airport turning the Kentucky film world over to the stars and crew of Surviving Guthrie, whose movie had its world premier before a packed Kentucky Theatre in Lexington tonight.
Surviving Guthrie, a 90 minute film that was produced and stars Georgetown (KY) College students and members of the community is a film about a college professor and his students. It was written by a student, directed by the head of the college's theatre department and seems to have involved the entire college community.
The film is not without flaws, but I'd be hard pressed to find them. I'm not a film buff and even less a Georgetown College fan (I'm a grad of Transylvania University, '79!). But it was so cool to see the hard work of dreamers bring their dream to life on the silver screen.
No doubt far more people will see Leatherheads than will see Surviving Guthrie. But if this work of dreamers makes it to a film festival near you, please go see it. All of us who are playwrights are dreamers of a sort: go out and support the dreamers of Surviving Guthrie. You won't regret the decision, or fail to be inspired by those who've put a stunning debut on film.
