From the article:

“There has been an upswing in the appetite for poetry,” said Kate D. Levin, New York City’s cultural affairs commissioner. With the advent of poetry slams and spoken-word events, she added, poetry has “moved away from an association with a rarefied crowd to a more populist world and the Poets House folks are tapped into that.” Poets House is among the first cultural organizations to open downtown since 9/11.

Thanks for posting the link and the excerpt.  It's a very interesting space - and the lease being paid-up thru 2069.

The importance of artists congregating to share stories, ideas, and swap books cannot be underestimated.  It's hard to list leading artists (or scientists) who did not engage (at least some of the time) with a community of similarly focused people.

Even something as silly as my Society of Irish-American Playwrights & Drinking Club plays a role in facilitating a gathering of artists to sit together for a few hours.  The act of sitting together is as relevant to creative art-making as performing or rehearsing.  It provides a means of refreshing one's spirit and intellect with friends and colleagues.

Edd:

My wife likes a little salami once in a blue moon so I do keep it in the cupboard for special occasions ;)

IMR:

Absolutely. I played today in my flight match play championship. Got hammered. After 600 miles in a car in two days, I was not a factor.
