For a good while I thought I had worked out a great, short synop for my place Clytemnestra, but after working with a dramaturg for over 6 mos I was told the synop, though concise, gave no flavor of the play and told her very little. She wanted more plotpoints included, so after a little sculpting, I've come up with.....
Something’s foul in the kingdom of Argos. A storm is brewing and an ancient curse threatens to resurface when its king wages war against a country it has long sought to befriend. All hopes of a painless ordeal vanish when a seer divines the only way to war is the sacrifice of his newborn child. Faced with an impossible dilemma, King Agamemnon makes a decision that sets into motion the curse’s resurrection and leaves his wife to deal with the fallout.
When Clytemnestra wakes to find her husband gone, her baby missing and a weakened kingdom within her grip, she’s forced onto a path to find both herself and her power. Facing intense scrutiny from her advisors, pressure from an unlikely suitor (the cut-throat exile, Aegisthus) and a swelling call to vengeance, she must traverse treacherous waters the keep her crown and carve a place for herself. Inspired by various myths and Aeschylus' Agamemnon, the play explores a new angle of the story, marrying heightened, often poetic language with contemporary speech as it sheds fresh light on the oft-maligned woman, offering access to the private life behind the public persona as she journeys from heartbreaking loss to political triumph. From victim to victor, Clytemnestra ascends the throne and holds court with horrifying consequences.
