heya paul, i've been playing about with the various settings, seeing what they do. i'm currently set to "invisible", and at first my name still showed up in the "who's online" section. now that no longer happens, but i don't show up in the count of "invisible". just wondering if this is a goof in the software, or if i'm just being daft.

Neither.
It means you aren't here. Computer Deva says so, doesn't it?

Hi mac
The clue is in the phrase "playoing around with the settings"
Go to "My Account", click Preferences and at the bottom you should see -
Always notify by e-mail when replies posted to topics you participated in
Enable private messaging
Notify by e-mail when you receive a private message
Allow administrator(s) of this board to send you e-mails
Browse the board invisible; your username will not appear in Who's Online.
I think you'll find you've checked the last option

paul, you misunderstood. i did that ON PURPOSE. what was confusing me was the count of members, who's online and whatnot at the bottom of the main forum screen. right now, i'm logged in, but on that main screen, it doesn't show that anyone's "invisible". i know what i did to my account settings. what i was wondering is why the software doesn't show me as being on the board invisibly. (isn't that the purpose of the "member", "guest", and "invisible" counts?)
what's the fun in being invisible when no one knows that someone's on the board in that mode?
:)
does that make sense?

Nearly as much sense as mana
The short answer to your question, Mac, is I dunno
Which is, in fact, also the long answer

My guess, Mac...is you needed to refresh your page.
Still...there's a metaphor for a play right here, biting you on the ass.
...oh...sorry...English place...bottom.

paddy, i'm already hard at work on your last challenge to me! i can only do so many challenges at once -- no matter how hard they're chomping at my nether regions.
:)
ps - did try "refresh" and it did no good. it seems that the software pretty much does whatever the hell it wants. sometimes i am visible, even though i continue to select "invisible" from the options. sometimes i am invisible, but do not show up on that list. thus, i will remain an enigma. i like being an enigma. tee-hee.

Mac,
Welcome to what programmers fondly think is "user friendly".
Software always does pretty much what it wants.
Humans think that's "Intelligent Design".
