we live in a best of society. so why not note the plays we think were particularly well written. i'm talking about the plays posted on the stageplays site.
my favorite, and my vote for best of is the play that's about this guy that goes to a doctor about having a computer virus, and the doctor asks questions about his level of protection, etc. i thought that was very clever and funny. i'd have to look back to find the title and author.
my favorite character is edd's mouse catcher. very funny.
liked a lot of short plays this year. almost everything i read here is good, some great. a bunch of good writers here.

For sheer emotional, dramatic, punch-in-the-gut effect... matthew matthew matthew's carefully crafted pathos of the mother and child in 'A Little Soul'.
For a superbly paced monologue and vivid characterisation - the budgie in BrianRobertNeal's 'Life Is But A Cage'.
(BTW - Leon, you're referring to Brettfauver's My Spam Has A Worm.)

I'm not sure this is a great idea, guys. I doubt many of us posted our plays and exercises to compete with other members. Is this why we write plays? Some of us might no longer partake in the exercises or post plays for critique. Others might write strictly to compete. We make our comments on each posted play's thread. Nothing is stopping anyone from going to a particular posting and saying you think it's the best play ever.

I agree with edd...or Solomon!
There have been many pieces on the Forum whether plays or poetry or discussion or critiques that I have found wonderful at whatever level of "completeness" they may have been.
I have found our comments on the forum to a person informative, well thought out, and most of all honest and hopefully helpful to the individual writers.
I love competition in the appropriate format. We do it all the time, often unconsciously. It can be inspiring. But no competitive bests here! I have sent some PM to people on occasion to compliment further and that might be the BEST way to handle the need to let someone know.
I once wrote edd what I like about The Forum is the people really do critique THE WORK. And most of us do not know who each other is!
Because of this international situation we do not have those goofy personality problems that come up in writers' workshops or classes with "guru" type teachers that sprout from too much daily proximity! That type of situation can either be positive or negative, but I think you all have experienced what I mean somewhere along the road of life!
I also wrote edd that given the set-up and structural limitations of the Forum, I found the work and the critiques on this forum as professional and thoughtful and constructive and courteous as any I have seen.
One limitation is it is hard to critique longer pieces. Who has the time? But I have always been taught, and in my experience have found it to be true, small pieces lead to larger pieces, even if it is years later. So, hold on to your stuff!
Due to time, I have only critiqued one full-length play here because I found it to be a story that had a lot of potential and was wonderfully bizarre and so outside of what my tastes usually are. It definitely needed some work, but it just captured me - or should I say literally KIDNAPPED me - and made me keep reading. I really NEEDED to know what would happen next to this assembly of characters. And I guess that is the point! How do we capture or KIDNAP the reader? And yet was this what I thought was "the best" I have seen here? No. I just thought it was wonderful enough to me to give my encourgement and critique.
Anyway, I compliment all who have submitted and critiqued. It is why I keep coming here and I know it is that way for many who do not even submit or critique.

One can post whatever superlatives one likes on the thread of any given play which brings the play to the top and to our attention. To have a section where we so much as suggest that this play or that play is the best or simply a must-read is devisive.

This thread reminds me of the old gag set in the Silent Monastery...
A chap joins. After a year, as they all are, he is allowed to utter just one sentence, and having thought about it for a week or so he stands up at breakfast and says "I don't like the porridge here, it's thick and lumpy!".
A year later, another Brother is allowed to speak - again, only once. He stands one morning any says "The porridge is great. But I can't stand the eggs - they are always overcooked!"
Twelve months on, a third Monk stands and has his single sentence; "I don't mind the porridge, and the eggs are bearable. It's the soggy fried bread that annoys me."
One year on, another stands. "The porridge is horrible, the eggs are nasty and the fried bread is passable - but I really hate it when they don't cut the rind off the bacon!"
In the fifth year, the original chap (remember him?) stands up and has his allowance of a single sentence.
"I'm leaving. I can stand the cold. I can bear the celibacy. I can handle the long hours. I don't mind all this going-into-the-community-to-do-good shite. I can even live with this crappy, scratchy habit. But I can't stand this fucking continual, incessant bitching about the catering!"
