The Hourglass Group presents:

“WRITING THE REAL: a double-weekend playwriting intensive with Karen Hartman.”
October 27/28 and November 3/4

“WRITING THE REAL” is a double-weekend intensive devoted to making theater from facts.  Whether you’re working on a family play, a political drama, or a solo show, this intensive will help you cut to the dramatic core of your story and work with authority and imagination.

Discover techniques for using political/historical and autobiographical source material, allowing you to approach fresh subjects with a truthful eye.  Build research skills, sharpen authentic dialogue, and refine your ability to shape a dramatic event.

The generous class time will allow each writer to make significant progress on a new or existing piece, leaving with renewed inspiration and enhanced tools (as well as new pages).

Class feedback and individual instructor attention support artists at all levels.

KAREN HARTMAN’s plays include GUM (Women’s Project, Center Stage, Magic Theatre, published by Theater Communications Group and Dramatist Play Service); GOING GONE (N.E.A. New Play Grant, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park); ANATOMY 1968 (Summer Play Festival on Theatre Row); GIRL UNDER THE GRAIN (Best Drama NY Fringe); and TROY WOMEN (based on Euripides, Yale Repertory Theatre/School of Drama, published by Backstage Books in Divine Fire).  Her work has been supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, the N.E.A., the Helen Merrill Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, a Daryl Roth “Creative Spirit” award, a Hadder Fellowship, and a Fulbright Scholarship to Jerusalem.  An alumna of New Dramatists, Yale University and the Yale School of Drama, Karen has taught playwriting at the Yale School of Drama and many other graduate, undergraduate, and independent venues.

Fee: $350

For more information or to register, please contact  classes@hourglassgroup.org or 212-439-8122 x2

Classes will be held at 520 Eighth Ave. (36th and 37th Streets), NYC, 3rd floor, studio B.
