A new version of my play Horst Buchholz and Other Stories will be the afternoon play on BBC Radio 4 this coming Monday (26 Nov 2007) at 2.15pm, available to listen to online for the following week. Further information can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-perl/whatson/prog_parse.cgi?FILENAME=20071126/20071126_1415_49700_57697_45.
Following this, there are two mini-revivals of Horst Buchholz. 1 December sees Dulwich Players reprise their production of the play from earlier this year - further details from their website http://www.dulwichplayers.org.uk/whats.html - whilst The Union Theatre, just around the corner from Waterloo Station, present a new production of the piece. The Union were the first theatre to stage a professional production of the play and, to celebrate their tenth anniversary, are reviving four of their favourite shorts for a new run from 5 December 2007 through to 12 January 2008 - however, this time I've given the piece a slight Christmas makeover for the festive season.
If you get a chance to tune into the broadcast next week or get along to one of the production, I hope you enjoy it!
Best regards
Matthew

That is just wonderful News! Nice little pick me up for the end of the year!
I will look forward to listening to it.
Can you tell us how "A Little Soul" went? Or did I miss a post? If it didn't win, the audience must have been a bunch of heathens.
best,

Thanks for the kind comments. Heard the recording for the first time two nights back and was really pleased with what they have done with the play. Am going to listen to the radio all day tomorrow so that I can hear any trailers between earlier programmes!
A Little Soul was really well done ... I was pleased with the performances and the direction, particularly given that a cast of six put on sokme sixteen plays off-script. Ultimately, my piece felt a tad slight given that it was rubbing shoulders with ten-minute plays (not part of the submission brief) but I was chuffed nonetheless.
Zeitgeist are doing more of these Play Slams and worth submitting to, although think they are ideally looking for writers in and around London.

3M,
I went to the link and it is not available.
Is it the correct link? I thought it was for one week.

MMM,
I wish the USA had just half the respect that the UK seems hold for its playwrights. I often believe I was born on the wrong side of the pond.
I am so happy for you, but disappointed by my stork's misguided sense of direction.

3M,
Loved it. Turned out the lights and just listened. Which is how I like radio drama and drama adapted or recorded for radio. Listen to Shakespeare this way, too.
Reminded me of the year when I participated in a Bowling League in a small town in Illinois at a VFW. The same types/variety of people and dramas internal and external. Taunts, threats, fisticuffs at times - between every sexual combination - much fun interplay, smell of beer, hops, barley and whiskey. People's lives intensified and made more alert by the thrill of competition, whatever the competition might be. You opened up a barrel full of stories for myself I had not thought about in years.
And the Magnificent Seven is one of my favorite movies of all time! Coburn with the knife.Vaughan the scared "Fast Gun" who used to catch more flies. Bucholz oohing and ahhing at the gunmen. Tough Bronson so gentle with the kids. Characters with a capital C.
Nice twists and turn in your piece.s. A couple of stunning moments, "Ann. Beautiful Ann." Whew! No more need be said. No elaboration needed. And you didn't! The whole story of Ann was in the line and how the actor said it. Unresolved tension with Allison. She'll be knocked up in a couple of years.
I am bookmarking the BBC page so I can listen to more of these. I listen to BBC World News on Radio nearly everyday and watch several times a week on TV.
SFX on the show were great except for the "whoosh" Quantum Leap TV show sound which was totally unnecessary. I could smell the place.
Thanks for the gift.
best,

Thanks for all the kind comments and, for those who had the chance to, for taking the time to listen. Glad that the notion of a pub quiz translated across to the US and beyong too - was unsure if it was just a very British thing.
IMR - Agree: the whoosh noises took me a little by surprise too. All the action in the pub was actually recorded on location in a pub as well, which really added to the authenticity ... it was a perfect setting in every way. And the actor who said the "Anne" line captured it beautifullt, I agree,
BBC Radio 4 (and to a lesser extent Radio 3) probably commisions more original drama than any other medium in the UK, and, unlike TV, has been positively encouraging work by first-time writers. Where else can you hear five new plays every afternoon and longer pieces on a Friday night and Saturday afternoon that offer such diversity (plus a serials and adaptations thrown in for good measure). The quality can vary and BBC cuts will see more repeats, I'm sure, but it's still a very exciting medium.
Cheers.
