TRIAL - screenplay reading

Host: Montserrat Mendez

Location: Manhattan Theatre Source
177 McDougal Street, New York, NY

When:  Sunday, December 16, 6:00pm

Phone:  973-223-3216

A couple of years ago - The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences put my screenplay TRIAL in their top 30 of the Nicholl Fellowship Competition.

It has been some time since i have revisited this life changing screenplay; and now, a few years later. I have found new things in it; and have fallen in love with the screenplay all over again.

Trial is the story of a court room trial that set of the McCarthy era, and yet no one really knows about.  It sent two people to the electric chair, and changed the nation forever.

Spanning decades from 1939 to 1952, I invite you to come and listen to the screenplay, as i develop it for production; and as I take on the difficult task of making this very visual screenplay into a stage worthy property for 2008.

A small reception will follow.

edd,

This sounds fascinating.

I hope you will get in touch with mozz and have a post about how it was received.

There are writers who are now trying to write revisionist history about McCarthy and make him seem like a good, misunderstood fellow.

And memory is short and people are not taught history. For instance, The Bush press secretary, Dana Perino, at a recent news conference, said she did not know about the Cuban Missile Crisis. That would be like not knowing about pearl harbor or D-Day or 9-11 or July 4, 1776. And this is this president's press secretary.

OH, WAIT A MINUTE. This president. That explains it!

Never mind!

But please get mozz to post a reply or through you. I really enjoyed the Salon with mozz.

I went to the reading tonight. The screenplay is very dynamic and chock full of characters who get and keep our attention. I was particularly impressed with how the screenplay took the main characters from idealistic student life through activist adulthood, where they made the decisions that had such tragic consequences. Because this is based on real-life people whose fate we already know, Mozz focused on the relationships, in particular on how they were shaped by the atmosphere of the developing Cold War and by the deferential role required of women. There was a lively discussion after, which is a sure indication that we all were involved.
