vanessa,
Does that mean Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, which is what Catholics called kids who went to public school and came to take religious study once a week? They were the "CCD" kids. or "CCD-ers."
Let us know how it goes.
best,

You got it, IMR!
CCD stands for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine AND Colony Collapse Disorder - the cause of the bee die-off...I smooched them together in my head, along with an article on ex-cons being trained as beekeepers and came up with a full-length play!
I'll keep you posted!

Well, folks... I just returned from the reading. As it turned out I had to play one of the roles, the actress had the flu. AND we had torrential rain so the turn out wasn't huge, but not to shabby. Anyhoo...
The audience reaction was there in almost all the places I expected it. The comments at the end were far ranging...some people absolutely getting it and some people absolutely not...as far as I know they were all in the same room...how does that happen? Who knows...
Now the hard part...sorting through all the comments. What to keep? What to toss out? How to apply any of it to the rewrite... Some of the people commenting were writers themselves, and I feel they were commenting on how THEY would write the play...so it's hard to know what to take from them.
Thoughts?

vanessa,
First: Congratulations just on getting it done.
Second: How many people you contacted actually showed up? And how many were therein total?
Third: Tough doing readings in flu season - which is very late this year.
Yes, good question you ask: Were the writers there commenting on your play or they play they would have written?
Was there a cohesive consensus about some stuff? Keep that stuff.
If there was something that was confusing anyone mentioned? REALLY look very humbly into that.
Some comments that may have cut deeply may be your most important ones. Let it sit for about a week.
Some comments must have made total sense to you. Little "Eureka" moments. Take humble note.
Arrogance is good. Humility is just as valuable. Arrogance/confidence about your talent is a must. But humility to your Muse is also must. If you are arrogant to your Muse, you will fail.
Re-write and do another version. Did you feel as if you have a real good piece after the reading?
best,

Vanessa,
There is not a word I could nor would want to add to what in media res said. I know nothing more informed, genuine or caring. I will remember that advice for myself.

Unfortunately none of the Artistic Directors I invited came, nor the beekeeper... There were about 25 people in attendance.
I do feel I have a great play on my hands. People were fighting to offer feedback, so it obviously resonated with the audience. My director, who has moderated many a feedback session, has never seen such enthusiasm before...so I'll take it as a good sign.
I'll take some time, let it sit and go back to work on it...
