People live in this house.
The house fits right in
with the rest of the houses.
Its windows face long
afternoons.

The house fits right in,
and no one guesses
the long afternoons
mean nothing.

And no one guesses
that the other houses
mean nothing
to this house.

Or the people who shudder
within—
their dreams like shadows,
wavering but persistent.

Or the houses that shutter
their windows, face
their own shadows.

Wavering but persistent,
we all live in a house.
