Hello all,

A play I wrote in English about French history recently had a public reading in Paris.  There I was fortunate enough to meet someone interested in doing a translation.

What is the usual way to pay for this?  A one time fee or points off of any production of the translated work?  If it's a point system, how many?  I trust this person and want to make sure I compensate them fairly, but I'd also not like to spend more than I need to.

(Just FYI:  It's full-length, no song lyrics or other tricky business, and I know enough French to help with some of the decision making when questions arise but nowhere near enough to do it myself.)

I'd love to hear what you think because while this person is experienced, their experience comes from translating 'classics.'  So this is one case (perhaps the only case) where good enough for Christopher Marlowe is not good enough for me.

Thanks!

If you are a member of the Dramatists Guild a playwright can e-mail them with that question.

Hope it works out for you!

Best,
