I have written an epic drama on Moliere with a runniing time of close to 2 1/2 hours. Is this too long for most producers? Do audiences tend to get uneasy when a play runs over two hours, excluding intermission? Or does it vary with the type of theatre, e.g., do Community Theatres prefer plays under two hours because they're less of a challenge to the cast and crew and are more likely to meet their audience's expectations?...while university or professional theatres might give you a longer leash? 10 minutes is too long if it's dull. 9 hours isn't enough if it fascinates.

Will it put off producers? It's a play about Moliere -- that will put off producers. Your job is to find the one theater/producer that thinks it rocks.

All plays turn off most producers for all sorts of reasons -- too long -- too short -- the wrong casting requirements -- too many locations -- the list goes on an on.

If you believe in the work, then stick to it.

This is just one play. You will write others.

Challenge yourself with the next play to make a whole new template.

Create a diverse body of work. You never know which one will open the door. When one does, you can introduce the others that may have "turned off producers" in the past.

Your career is about more than one play. That's why you must write as many as you can.

It's helpful to try and get hold of any submission guidelines

from theatres offering to accept unsolicited plays. There

may well be some indication of the kinds of plays they're

looking for and length, cast size, etc.

One of the reasons for keeping plays to two hours is

economics. You can sell drinks before, during and after

the show even meals if the theatre has a restaurant.

But perhaps the main artistic reason is that the attention span

of modern audiences is relatively short having been conditioned

by other media.
