Does anyone recognise the following play or movie? We recorded it ages ago in the middle of the night. We never had the title, but I watched it a number of times because it was very funny. Then I assume that it got taped over. (Remember when video tapes were very expensive?)
Title: Unknown
Actors: Unknown.
Filmed: Perhaps the 1950s.
Set: Un-named country in Europe mid 1800s?
The plot is set in a villa in an occupied town soon after the end of a war. It emerges that the war was won by a dashing cavalry officer leading his men across no-mans-land against orders. His superiors knew that there was an artillery unit there. However, the wrong sized cannon balls had been delivered.
The show is mainly a romantic comedy. The dashing cavalry officer is the occupying commander, a buffoon who accidentally won the battle. It is the (older, professional) artillery officer’s home town and villa. There are two women who pursue both of the officers. I recall a comedy of errors, but little detail.
One line that I remember is from one of the women: “I saw you making laaaarve to (the other women)”, referring to a few seconds holding hands. Another is the artillery officer: “I laughed on the other side of my face when I was told that the wrong cannon balls had been delivered and we couldn’t fire.”
Although filmed on location, the style suggested to me that it was a play that had just been filmed. The over-acting and timing seemed more like live theatre than film.
If you recognise any of this and can give me a name, I would be very grateful. It has bugged me for years.
Regards
Cliff
