If I were to win a production at a theatre, then that artistic director were to give my script, without asking me, to someone at another theatre, should I feel honored, or miffed? I'm feeling a combination. Of course I want my scripts to have as wide an audience as possible. But it seems a little common courtesy would be in order.

Well...first thing....in this world of struggling trying to get productions, most people would gladly do a happy dance, naked in their yard for that kind of compliment.  It's very normal that a company pass on something they think is valuable.

Second thing that jumped out at me....win a production?

Was it a contest?

I am most sure the person had your best interests in mind.

However...

Proper form would have been to let you know and ask you would you mind if he/she passed it on to another theatre.

Of course your answer would have been "Yes. How thoughtful. Please do. Thank you very much. And thank you for asking my permission, I appreciate that. And it shows you are a stand up person." It is just good to know where your scripts are.

On occasion, some close friends have casually handed me a script they have read and say, "Tell me what you think of this." I have done it as well. This goes on all the time. Essentially, the script really does not leave their hands, as it is a reader's opinion they want, in order to see if it concurs with theirs, and the script is quickly returned to them.

However, if I am ever going to "get the script to someone" beyond my intimate scope, I always ask the playwrights permission.

But I do think in the age of the internet things get passed around so easily and quickly, some don't even think about it. And thus, our scripts can get passed around like a volleyball without us ever knowing it.

I think your combination of feelings is appropriate.

best,

You never know the circumstances that led to this casual sharing between the theaters.  While it is appropriate for a theater to ask you if it's okay to pass your script along to colleagues (and the vast majority of theaters do ask), it may have happened that a representative from a theater was visiting and asked if anything interesting had turned upfor the contest.  In such a case, the people in the literary office might have shown a few promising pieces (as they're short they are easy and fast to read).

It's always a good idea to remain courteous, but find out how the script came to be shared.  Then you can make note of the response and next year decide whether or not you wish to submit additional material to this theater.
