Hi there,

Does anyone have any advice on whether to create a page on either Myspace or Facebook (or both?) to help increase one's visibility and presense on the web as a playwright. Myspace seems essential for musicians. Which sites (if any) are good for playwrights?

First my disclaimer: I'm not a member of either MySpace or Facebook. I feel very uncomfortable giving them permission to collect and disseminate whatever info they collect on me at their discrection. I suggest everyone read the Privacy Notice before joining.

That said, I know there's an active group of Playwrights on Facebook.

Facebook.  Myspace is last week's bread.

But something to consider is this --

on Facebook people who are not on your friends list cannot view your profile.

On Myspace you have an option whether non-mypace friends or members can view your profile.

Facebook, however, is a better social networking site.  It enables you to keep tabs on friends and associates.  I like it a whole lot.  It has a better look and interface than Myspace -- and the ads are not as intrusive on Facebook as they are on Myspace.  Also on Facebook you can give thumbs up and thumbs down about certain ads, so that some very interesting things turn up (I found an excellent class that I'm taking this term that showed up as an ad that I clicked on Facebook).

If you want a site that talks about you and your work (and is free) try Squidoo rather than Myspace -- or get yourself listed on Doolee.  Myspace is okay, but it's really gone downhill since it was over run by teenagers.

I have both, but I much prefer MySpace.  You can check both out and see for yourself.  By the way, I've gotten 2 productions because of MySpace; an in-progress production of "The Wake" in Connecticut and "Desert Devils" in Texas -- both full-length.   On Facebook you will need to click on my name at the top of the page.  Maybe non-members won't be able to see it.  Let me know, please.

By the way, I have nearly 1,700 "friends" on MySpace and most all of them are Theatres or people working in the Theatre.  No teenagers, except for MaryS, Vanessa, Kato, Potabasil, Leon, Mary Alice and me.  Great for networking and getting familiar with hundreds of Theatres and they with you.

I don't know that non-friends can't view your profile.  Maybe non-members?  I think friends can.  I can.  How else could I invite friends?  And they me?

To be fair, I never really gave Facebook a chance, so I'm more than likely staying with what's familiar.  I only check into Facebook when somebody sends a message, otherwise I use MySpace the most since, as you can see if you go there, I've invested a whole lot into it.

The bottom line is that the difference between them, I think, depends on your own temperament.  Do both.  You'll soon find out which one you like best.

I'm also on both...I hate Facebook though...not really sure why. I can't figure out how to use it and what all the gifts and pokes are for. But, that may just mean I'm getting old. Or it may mean I'm still acting like a teenager. Well, I am still acting like a teenager...as much as possible :)

What I like about myspace is the ability to blog and post things as bulletins. (Now I'll be getting an e-mail from someone with a brain who can tell me how to blog and post bulletins on Facebook ;) And Myspace is just easier to use IMO...

What I would suggest is keeping it all about playwriting...visitors to my page can read about all the bad tips I get. Not too smart on my part...possibly...but these days the tips are what I live on. Have one for playwriting and another one for fun...

Hello, friends.

I never thought I would be on Facebook but another playwright persuaded me to join because she thought I would be interested in a women's playwriting group that could only be reached through Facebook.

So I did join. Today.

It took me a while to figure out even the basics (I'm technologically handicapped) but I like it. Maybe because it's one more way to communicate with other playwrights and find out about what's going on in the world of theater.
