The play I have in mind is largely inspired by a biography I've read. It's not the only biography on the principal character, and the events of my play are true-to-life. The biographer not only did their own research, they drew from existing works, and of course included a bibliography at the end of the book.

I'm presuming that so long as I'm not lifting the writer's own original words from the book, and interpeting the scenes in my own, I'm not guilty of plagiarism. And I presume I too would want to attribute the inspiration to the writer(s).

Inspired in part by the works of <author>

Yes, no, maybe? Thanks...

I want to add that I am looking into other sources on plagiarism, i.e.

This is a good question, and it probably has a complex answer. Are you a member of the Dramatists Guild? I'd ask their legal department.

Indeed. It is an expensive that'll have to wait until next pay day, but I definitely plan on joining.
