http://www.centralsquaretheater.org/history_urt.html

Underground Railway Theater is a theater-in-residence at Central Square Theater, formerly in residence at the Arlington Center for the Arts. The company also tours a diverse repertoire, both nationally and internationally. Our offerings include:
• Family shows and children's theater
• Larger-than-life shadow puppet spectaculars, performed to symphonic music
• Original cabarets and full-length plays inspired by contemporary social and political issues

Underground Railway Theater creates dynamic connections between high-quality professional theater and community. Combining actors, puppets and music, URT presents theater of social content and great visual beauty - theater that challenges and delights, informs and celebrates.

The company's sponsors include theaters, schools, universities, concert series, orchestras, churches, peace education groups, community groups and performance series. The Underground Railway Theater is proud to be the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Advancement Grant.

Underground Railway Theater is a member of Actors Equity Association and operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres, Actors Equity Association and the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the USA.
A Brief History of the URT

The Theater was founded in 1976 in Oberlin, Ohio, one of the last stops in the midwestern branch of the Underground Railroad. The company took its name from this chapter in American history, carrying on in a spirit of hope and inter-cultural collaboration.

Past work includes performances with major orchestras throughout the country, residencies at the Smithsonian Institute, and appearances at Lincoln Center, Arena Stage and the Kennedy Center. The company has received citations for excellence from UNIMA (the international guild of puppetry) and has performed in France, Spain, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater currently accept script submissions from both playwrights and agents. We encourage you to learn more about the two companies’ missions and production histories to determine the best match for your work. Please submit full scripts with a cover letter, production/development history, clear cast breakdown, and playwright’s biography. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, please allow for at least a six month reading period, after which a member of the artistic staff will respond if there is further interest.
