Submit your short plays, long plays, scenes, and monologues to the eleventh annual New Works Festival at College of the Canyons. In the spring of 2012, selected plays will be presetned in the Black Box Theatre at the Valencia campus.
A collaboration between the COC English and Theatre Departments, the festival gives aspiring writers the opportunity to see their work transmitted from the page to the stage. Writers do not need to be current students at College of the Canyons. If your piece is selected, writers are required to register for one credit in the spring semester.
The festival is directed by David Stears, longtime adjunct faculty for COC’s Theatre department. David is no stranger to developing new work, having developed, produced, or directed over 150 new plays and workshop pieces. “In theatre, it is the play that comes first. Our workshop focuses on supporting playwrights in discovering the essence of their work and giving voice to their pieces during the writing process.”
Since spring of 2000, the New Works Festival at College of the Canyons has provided a safe and creative environment for writers to explore and develop, with over 100 pieces presented. Alumni from the festival continue go on to have their work produced in staged reading productions around the country.
Plays should be original works submitted by the original playwright. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, November 16, 2010 (noon) in the TLC lab at the Valencia campus (Bonelli Hall, room 209). Scripts will be reviewed and selected by members of the English and Theatre Departments at College of the Canyons.
